intermittent rough performance while driving or idling

hi all - i'm new to the forum but have used it a bunch of time to search out answers. my newest problem, however, is pretty weird and i'm not finding anything threads that match my specific symptoms. here goes:

I have a 95 civic EX, all stock.

sorry in advance for writing a book, but i figured the more info y'all have, the better.

a couple months ago i noticed that my idle would drop down a bit when at a stop, and i'd have to rev to about 2K RPMs before accelerating from a stop in order to get normal power. after a couple of weeks the problem expanded into a quick hesitation when driving at a maintained speed, THEN it would sometimes (totally at random) run as though it's missing on a cylinder. this feeling as though it's "missing" is still going on, and seems to be slowly getting worse. sometimes i can drive all day and it's A-OK, then sometimes i can drive all day and it's running rough. sometimes i can start to accelerate, everything's OK, then all the sudden it'll run rough, then good, then rough, then be fine -- or just the opposite.

here's a list of what i've done (in chronological order) with the help of a more experienced friend, but none of these repairs/replacements has helped me at all, even though they seemed to be logical culprits:

- replaced the fuel filter
- ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through it (seemed to help a bit for that tank of gas, but that was during the time when it could work fine for days at a time)
- replaced plugs, wires, cap+rotor
- cleaned all of my electrical contacts
- replaced distributor

my friend said that i could be the IACV(?) that has gotten dirty, but i am also curious as to whether this could be related to a faulty injector or perhaps a damaged timing belt (Honda timing belt with 60K on it).

I'm just a backyard mechanic, so please talk to me like i'm a n00b - i won't get offended.

Well you've taken the right steps so far. I would have suggested to check the dizzy, and make sure it's timed properly as well. Also, check that your cam timing is TDC. My car did something similar, turned out to be CKP sensor (Crankshaft Speed Sensor) in the dizzy housing. Replaced the whole dizzy, timed at both the dizzy and cam, and she fired up and has run fine. I'd also recommend checking your 02 sensor(s), as they can affect both gas mileage and acceleration. A fuel injector is also another good culprit. You could always try running seafoam in the crank case, through the brake booster, and in your gas tank if you're on a budget.

Thanks, Tokyo -

I failed to mention that we did make sure that the distributor was timed correctly (lined up the TDC mark on the timing belt pulley, and both it and the dizzy were lined right up).

I was thinking O2 sensors, but I am not getting any Check Engine Light at all, so that leads me away from them, however it's not ruled out.

SeaFoam in the crank case and brake booster? Can you explain this tactic for me? I guess I don't see how it would help, but again I'm still pretty new at all this. Also, how much SeaFoam in each of these areas would you suggest? I can't imagine a whole can would be good for either

**edit, also the dizzy is mounted so that the timing is right in the middle. honestly, advancing/retarding the timing really didn't do much. when i was rotating the distributor while the car was running (at temp)... that in itself gets me to thinking - I'll check that right after i get home from work to see what happens.

Ah okay, good. Yeah, usually you get a CEL for 02 sensors, but if they're starting to go out, you won't. You can always pull it out of the socket and check the tip for thick white sediment. If it's coated, it's probably time to replace it.

As far as the SeaFoam, this article will give you a good step by step on doing it right:

just an update - i've since cleaned the IACV (known on my civic as the EACV) and it really was not very dirty. just a small amount of carbon buildup, but nothing that would be problematic i think.

I also double-checked the timing and it looks spot on.

have a set of injectors on order from ebay - they should be here tuesday. i got lucky and found a "100% guaranteed working" set of 4 used injectors for $35 with free shipping. quite a good deal.

so hopefully the issue is one of the injectors - i guess we'll see soon enough. i'll post another update afterwards!

Be sure to clean the injectors, and the fuel rail before you install.
