I've seen this, but 25,000 signatures is nothing in comparison to the population of a state, even the smallest of states. Most of the states that have started a secession petition have only about half the number of required signatures. It's very difficult to take this seriously with such a small amount of people backing it.

Even if this did get more attention, the people pushing for secession are likely VERY misinformed. What do they think is going to happen when they secede? They'll magically be respected by the world, everyone will open trade with them.. their wealth of natural resources in their single state will make them plenty of money, and jobs will start popping up? And all of this will happen while they simultaneously start a military, pay for all new equipment, weapons, vehicles, etc?

Secession is highly unlikely. If it did happen, it would be a very foolish decision.

I agree. Just thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention. I believe texas is around 45,000 signatures now, but you are right, very small number compared to the states population.

I don't understand it. I guess it's just a bunch of people mad because things aren't going their way.

It won't. Federal gov't: "Oh, Texas seceded? They have oil? How many jets is this gonna take?" And that would be that lol

The last time the states tried to secede from the union, the civil war was started.
That's actually not true. Petitions like this have happened MANY times, they're just never serious enough to warrant any actual attention. There was a big section of Illinois that wanted to secede from the union as the nation of Forgottonia a few decades ago.

Yeah, last time I went to a gun show they had all kinds of dumbass petitions floating around (secede from the United States, impeach the Prez, etc). Nobody around here takes that crap seriously. Unfortunately, get a slow week in the media and some yahoo gets noticed on the national level. "Republic of Texas" my ass. What would be the point? Might as well go back even further, and declare ourselves part of Mexico again for all the sense that makes

The thought it for texas to break off then few of the other states (alabama, louisisana, etc) wouod follow them consecutively forming the new (confederacy). Ill explain why this will and will not work. The reason it wouod be able to work is the amount of resources the southern states can receive and send are plenty seeing how you in the north or big industry i would assume the south would go oil and food. As for trade i do not think that it would be affected. If the united states tried to do what they did last time by taking it back by force i believe with mindset of the american poplulation now that the united states government would come over complete scrutiny. I also believe that many other countries would be more willing to trade with the south due to most likely less taxation on imported goods. The problem is who will be running this. Their are no major figure heads that have stood up and said they will help serlt up this new government. Tig and hendo your comments on being a black man in presidency seat is incorrect not to mention ignorant. The problem comes from the dislike of the governments "progress".

So if a state breaks away, then they have to elect new leaders with power similar to a president. Then half that population isn't happy with that person so they try to break away too. Now we have mini countries inside mini countries until everyone rules their own shi*. And if you ever want to go to another state, too bad. You have to have a passport and pay all sorts of taxes. Vacationing or visiting family is tough or impossible. Shipping parts (ebay, craigslist) becomes ridiculously expensive or impossible.

.... what are we talking about again?? I like cake

I lol'd.

My buddy and I were just talking about this kind of thing, except it was with Washington, Oregon, part of Idaho and Alaska doing the same thing. I honestly think it's a terrible idea. I don't feel like the US is really as bad as they're making it out to be.

The southern states are always the first to b***h and moan and cry when it comes to change. They do NOT like change. This is all horseshit, and will blow over after we let them cry their little eyes out.

I just feel like the more "conservative" states have a harder time adapting to change, and they're so dead set in their ways they're too stubborn to change.

It's all relative though. I was raised WAY different than I feel like they were.

Hahaha. It goes both ways. Btw all change is not for the better interest for the whole. Just think if things would of gone the opposite way. Just something to think about before your misguided views continue.

please don't lump all Texans with these dumbasses. I dearly love living in my state, but I'm an American first. We have a bad enough reputation as whooping retards, without these guys making us look even more idiotic

This is actually part of my point.... Like I said, such a small part of the population is trying to secede. Completely unrepresentative of the common peoples' desires.

True, but they've still reached the required amount of signatures for an official white house response, so I'm curious as to what they have to say. A couple of states have passed this mark actually.
