So a little while ago my civic started sputtering. I was told that it was a blown head gasket and the compression was down on the #3 cylinder. I proceeded to tear the engine apart and When I pulled the head off, there wasn't so much as a burn on the head or gasket. From what ive seen this may have just been the distributor. But i haven't been able to find a solid answer.

1. What engine, how many miles, and what were the compression numbers? Any codes? Were you losing coolant, and was it overheating?

2. Dizzys are a common part to go bad on older hondas, most of the time the engine starts to cut out under acceleration.

Its got around 230,000. The only code I was able to pull up was the missing O2 sensor which i was already aware of, I had been loosing coolant but not often, the oil was fine so I know it wasnt mixing, and It overheated once. because of low coolant. I had the sputtering problem for awhile but it just got really bad this one day, then I tried to start it and it would turn, just not ignite.

Sounds like a possible coil problem. But that doesnt explain the missing coolant unless u had a hole in the radiator

If you can, hook up a test light and drive the car while watching the spark fire. If it is the spark that is cutting out bc of a bad coil or dizzy, you will be able to see it.

It turns out, theonly problemwith it wasin fact the distributor. I had to tear apart the whole engine to find that out but its running great now. Thank you all for the help.

Nice job.

Is the compression still bad on the #3 cylinder? Sucks you had to pull the head before you found out it was just a dizzy tho :(

Nah the compression is fine, I replaced a few of the seals while I was down there. I do need to know something though. Ive been trying for the past forever to find a carbon kevlar lip for my car but have'nt been able to find a single one. Do any of you know where I can find one?

What generation? BYS makes a lip for the 5th gen, and a complete front bumper for the 6th gen. Pretty sure you can get kevlar lip for them both, but its probably rare because I don't see a lot of them.

5th gen. Its a 94 ex coupe. Ive looked just about everywhere for them but they every website ive been to leads to a dead end. The closest ive got is PWJDM but they dont make a lip for it.
