Just picked up this civic ex 1997 and the sunroof works fine opening and closing but doesn't tilt up :( pretty pissed right now. What causes this?

I have this problem too at times. Mine usually only won't tilt when it's cold outside. Interested to hear what might cause this.

Start with the switch, a replacement is like 20-30 bucks, might just be that

I always start with the easy and work my way out from there

It's not the motor if it slide in and out of the roof. It's either the switch or relays, there are two small gray relays behind the switch and kickpanel, one controls tilt and the other controls the sliding motion. Switch the two and see if the tilt starts working and the slider quits working

There is no need to change the sunroof switch unless confirmed bad,
First measure voltages at this sunroof switch which should be:
1- yellow must have 12v
2- yell/red must have 12 v
3- blue musta have 12v
4- black is ground 0 volt

If those voltages are there is the sunroof switch, the switch is Bad

Civic sunroof open-close and tilt-close switches.JPG Civic Moonroof circuit.png Generally the yellow always have it's 12v unless the fuse is open, that's why this sunroof major problems are Tilt and closing, opening only is afected by Fuse 24 (7.5A) and Fuse 42 (40A) a bad motor or a Bad sunroof switch.
Yel/red and blue 12v depends on a route that goes to the Tilt/close and open/close switches located in a small block near the sunroof motor as you can see in the pictures attached.
If those 12v on the yel/red and blue are missing check the Tilt/close switches the problem might be there, maybe dirty switch ( spray with contact cleaner manipulating the switch to see if it start making contact again) or view a way to replace them.
If you don't want to remove the headliner to reach those switches then jump Yell/red to the Grn/red of the close relay to bypass Tilt/close switches and make the sunroof close but without the Tilt funtion and stoppin it at the correct close position

LOL. You do have to admit that it was a pretty good response though. Usually it is some newb asking a question or if they ever fixed it.
