Brakes Problem

Hey everyone,

I got a 96 Honda Civic EX 2 door coupe. 130K miles on it. I recently bought it and today I noticed that when I press down on the brake pedal, the car will stop with no problem, however if I press on it hard and keep my foot firmly on the pedal, the pedal starts to slowly move forward all the way till it touches the floor of the car. I have to take my foot off the pedal to have it come back up and have a firm hold like the first push, but it still goes in with time and a firm hold on it. What could be the issue? And no I haven't done any brake service to the car except change the rear drums. The car came with new slotted rotors up front, so i felt no need. Please help me out

do you see any brake fluid leaks? if not it is most like you master cylinder is leaking.

geeze I haven't looked yet, I will look first thing tmrw morning. If that is the case however, the "master cylinder is leaking" then what can i do to fix that?

Buy a new master cylinder. I wouldn't suggest attempting the repair yourself w/o some line wrenches.

Sounds good, i looked up prices last night and its pretty cheap to just buy a new one. However, I got one thing to add. I checked this morning to see if any fluid is leaking from the brakes and there isnt. I didnt have time to pop the hood and take a look underneath to check the master cylinder. When i was braking today, everything seemed to be fine. This weird.

You shouldn't be able to see any sort of leak from the master. The internal seals can go bad. The pressure you make by stepping on the peddle can work its way past the seals, causing the peddle to keep lowering down to the floor.

Yeah sounds like the MC. They aren't difficult to change. But yeah you do want to use line wrenches and you'll need to bench bleed the new MC before installing then bleed the brake system. Takes time, a second hand helps with the bleeding process, but not hard. Either way, get it fixed asap. You don't want the Mc to completely fail on you while driving.

One more thing guys before I start buying so many parts. All I need is the master cylinder correct? Not the brake booster
