My wife and I took a class about 5 years ago called "Financial peace university". It completely changed our lives. In it, Dave keeps saying the words "Live like no one else, so that later you can live like no one else". Meaning, live below your means young so that later in life you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. We didn't even have a savings account 5 years ago. Today we have enough money to sit nice for maybe 2 or 3 years if neither of us made another cent. By the time i'm 50ish, i'm hoping that will take us to the end of the road.
Having said that, this watch is kinda opposite of the words we've lived by these last few years, BUT, to my defense we bought our phones yesterday (iphone and Note 3) cash in full to avoid the 2 year contract. So with all the money we saved, we're still on top even after the watch. So... yeah...
That's a good plan. I'm hoping to find a median with that philosophy: I make okay money, but I'm single and have little to no debts. My bills are very affordable and very, very comfortable for me, I'm paying off all the damage I did to my credit (which I'm happy to say, will be fixed by January!), and I have 3 current credit cards that I'm on top of. I use them mainly for revolving credit to help maintain/build my score, and for emergencies/large purchases (like visiting my parents for the holidays.. about $1k in expenses, credit card is amazing for that). I need to start setting up a savings account, and dribbling even a little bit of money in it.
Yeah I really need to start saving more. I've been blowing money on guns and ammo recently. But on the bright side, if the zombie apocalypse comes I'll be in good shape
I feel ya man!
And now that i'm thinking about it... One of the tips we learned doing "Financial peace university" all those years ago was that once you have cash, it really IS king. You can do a lot with cash that you wouldn't other wise be able to do. For example, and probably one of the coolest stories I have is my rent. My rent here in AK is $2,250/month. Includes all utilities and a 2 car garage. SUPER rare in AK. Not many houses have garages this far north because the cost to heat them is insane. So after 12 months last year and $27,000 of rent I thought something has to change! I can afford it sure, but it pains me to do so having come from San Antonio where my house was twice as big and 10x nicer for only $1000/mon! So... Going back to that class we took, when my lease was up we walked over to the office with $20,000 cash and said we wanted to commit to another year but we didn't want to spend more than this. They gladly accepted and boom. Saved $7000 on the year just because we had been living smart all those years before. And I plan to do the same thing when I get south next week. Look for an apt renting from a private seller and offer them 12 months of rent cash up front at ~75% the rate and see what happens
.... Hard to turn down stacks of $100's rolled up in bank paper marked $5,000 each.
I'm sure most places will gladly take that kind of cash, but do be careful! Out here, lots of drug dealers do that (although not for a full year). If you're more than willing to sign a contract and put your name all over everything, I doubt even a property management company would say no to that. Hell, ours offered us a rent-to-own deal for like 40% of what the house is worth. I don't want the house, though haha.
I live about the happy medium of this. I didnt have savings until 2 years ago and if i wouldve had savings for the last ten years and put money away like i do now then i would easily have over $300k in savings. Buut i didnt. So ce la ve.
I enjoy living while im young. I dont want to miss out on things and dont want my kids to either. Sure it may bite me in the ass later, but i dont see myself retiring early.
Now if i made the kind of money i used to make then of course i would be putting 10k in savings a month and still living pretty good.
I guess ive never understood missing the best years of your life by living frugal and then being old and having money but nothing to really spend it on.
I say u did great by getting what u want!
Bingo, I agree. I enjoy living, I want to see the world before I'm too old to enjoy it, and I have expensive taste. I don't mind indulging myself on the finer things in life. I'm not vain by any means (hell, I DID drive a 97 civic with a salvage title and faded ass paint for three years
), but if I can afford it, I will gladly pay a little extra to spoil myself occasionally. I can do it now because I'm single and young, might as well! As soon as someone comes around to change the single part, I'll start living more frugal, in order to plan for my future, though.
Agree 100%. I don't live "poor" because what fun is that? But I don't live above my means like the "American way" tells us to. If I don't have cash, I don't buy it. I haven't had a credit card for years and years because when I was stupid, I had 3 of them maxed out with out an income to support my stupidness. So I think your "happy medium" is probably about right for me as well.
I wish I could afford to pay for everything I have in cash. About 99% of the things I have, I can pay in cash for. The car is about the only thing I can't. I literally don't use my credit for anything I can't afford out of pocket. Hopefully, that's the right way to do things. We'll find out soon enough
