People buy R1's for the same reason that people buy a Lamborghini. Do you think those dudes owning Gallardos are driving them to their full potential? I don't think so. They own them for their own reasons.. styling, lifelong dream, status symbol etc. The same can be said about super bikes like Hayabusas and Ducati 999R's. Badass bikes that all of us would no doubt happily take if one were given to us (myself included. I'd LOVE a Ducati).
most irresponsible people who buy super bikes for that reason end up in the hospital. those bikes are not toys to be played with.

a R6 is faster than a Gallardo. R1 is in the low 10s for the quarter mile. that's more like Aventador LP-700, Bugatti Veyron acceleration for $14,000. which will be on a monthly payment plan.

you're right though, people buy those super sport bikes for stupid reasons and more often than not those people end up paying for it and giving a bad reputation to those types of bikes. the more mature motorcycle community would wish those people would leave their ego out of it when it came to riding.

People who own those bikes don't HAVE to be ego-maniacs. I've met plenty of dudes with larger/faster bikes that were really cool and rode them with respect to the bike. Same with super-car owners (I know a guy with a Ferrari 360 Modena). You're just generalizing now, for the sake of lumping people into categories. Life doesn't work that way.

One of my old coworkers had a Hayabusa. Super cool guy, and respected his bike. Not sure what his reasoning was for getting that bike, but he was really big in the bike community here. Not bike GANG, but they did charity stuff and the like.

Exactly. Just further proves my point!

oh uh. probably medical insurance and then gear.
This.

Also, it used to be that you would only be allowed if you had a FULL suit. NO textile crap and no jacket/pant combos. SOME of them allowed if you had ones that zipped together but not all. It's been a while so things may have changed but I am guessing they are still pretty much the same.

I also wouldn't recommend taking your normal bike there. Although many people do it, be prepared to lose it. Reason why most people have dedicated track bikes. I have seen top riders go down on a simple mistake (weather it be mental, physical, or mechanical) and have seen newbs destroy great bikes going over their limits. The track pushes you to go to the edge of your skills and where you get into trouble is when you go too far. Nice thing is, you don't have other drivers around you to run you over after you go down, nor do you have pedestrians or animals to deal with running out in front of you.

your point that a few people you know are respectful riders? i'm not arguing against responsible riders here.
would all those riders you know ride a less aggressive bike any differently? i would guess they ride about the same no matter what bike they're on.

if it cost 14k would you suggest a dodge viper to a new driver? it doesn't take much to get into trouble with something like that. same thing for super sport bikes. even if you are responsible the safety net with a less aggressive bike is much wider.

also you may want to consider switching the shifter to the reverse of what it is on the road.

the track is another place where i would suggest the ninja 250 to start. sv650 is a popular choice as well

Breaking your phone sucks. Even moreso when the screen isn't broke, but the unit behind it.

Shoot for 99-02! My ex had a purple 2001 Special Edition. It was tiny (perfect for her, as she was 5'3 and 115lbs), and kinda hard for me to get into (I'm 5'11, 160lbs), but they handle good, and are nice for what they are! I think her dad got it for like $5500 with 64k original miles. 6spd manual, leather interior, cloth top etc.
I can't do this with a NB miata.

here's a mermaid to cheer you up
Strange, after looking at this picture my strep has seemed to vanish.
