Is the transmission connected to the engine?

Yeah it can be done. You need the trans, starter and a battery with enough juice to crank over and over and over. I did a compression and leak down test on the motor I currently have in my '95 before I purchased it. It was worth doing since the motor checked out fine and I've been running with that motor for about 3 years now without any issues.

yes still attached

thanks for always replying to post
  1. Install the starter in the transmission.
  2. Run a cable and a wire from the (+) post of a charged car battery to the starter motor and solenoid terminals, respectively, and a cable from the transmission to the (-) post of the battery so that you can crank the engine.
  3. If you can crank the engine, you can do a compression test.

I cracked the head and found this in number one cylinder and these are new pistons

I also replaced all the valves intake and exhaust in the head
