I bought a 1993 Honda Civic LX with the 1.6 D16z6 "mini me" swap. About a yr ago I was driving with a fuel tank of gas and my car started jerking and sputtering around 65-90. In between time I have replaced the fuel filter atleast 3-4x's, rotor cap and button, distributor module, upgraded spark plugs and wires, ran numberous amounts of SEAFOAM, STP fuel injector cleaner, even tried the Lucas stuff. Presently, replaced the fuel pump to have it do the same thing but the pump just cut off and stopped working so I had to result back to using my old pump. I had the battery checked and its got good volt power. I have ran out of personal options and basically looking for help to diagnose this painful costly problem. I have noticed a GREAT loss in my gas mileage, and it is has placed my process of restoring the car on hold. I have plans of changing the exhaust but I would rather get this problem fixed first.

Just a thought, an expensive thought..... Maybe ur ECU is bad, years ago I had a similar problem in my Ford Ranger. I fried a my stereo which caught fire while I was driving, it cause a short somewhere in the ECU and around 70 I started sputtering, I did the fuel pump, filter, even changed the fuel rail too. Finally the old man at the shop I was working at told me to get a new ECU. When I did the problem went away.

Now that was in a Ford 4cyl not a Honda, so it may not be, but the problems were similar. Hopefully someone else here experienced the problem and can give u a definite answer. Good luck!

Thread Makers: Thread titles must summarize the technical question or problem, and the first post must include the year, trim, and any mods for your Civic.
Thread title changed. Please stick to the rules and make titles that reflect what you are actually asking. Threads with titles like yours don't usually get any decent help in them because most people just scroll by.

Also, a poll in a thread like this is a complete waste of time. Yours and everyone elses. I would suggest actually troubleshooting instead of guessing which is what the poll is suggesting. Guessing will, as you have found out, waste money. Throwing parts at a problem is never a good solution.

Your distributor timing maybe be retarded or to advanced. hence your fuel is not burning properly although that maybe a a symptom of a different problem all on its own. Any codes? misfires specifically? or IACV? (Idle air control valve) maybe a vacum leak. But it sounds to me like a IACV. I swapped a D16y8 into my 95 converting an auto harness and wel the IACV had to be repined to work with the manual Trans ECU. So the IACV wasn't even operating so it was unable to control the airflow passed the throttle body. If your car is unable to have steady idle at about 1500rmps (even while in neutral) that is your problem. This is my conclusion after reading that you did a mini me swap.

Here is a threat i posted on a different but helpless forum site where i got no help and ended up answering my own question...

I sure hope this helps you. For repining the Ecu wires you can find it on YOUTUBE.

^Post the CEL codes, and also tell us what ECU is installed. You need a P28 ECU.

Thank you for the replies. I replaced my ECU with a stock P28 one from the actual Bardaman Honda Dealership because mines went bad and that was around 2-3 years ago. As for my distributor, I replaced the rotor cap, button, and control module and that's it. Could there still be a miss? I just ordered a new rack and pinion unit and now I have a throttle body complete system coming in with the sensors, IACV, and lines and stuff. I plan on replacing my stuff and seeing if there is a change in which I am thinking it could be. Just cut out the cat and put just a straight to see if there was a change in which it is not. Still bad idling below 2000rpm and sputtering like it is going out of gas around 60 mph and up!

Does your CEL work? Click the Codes link in my signature.

My work site is not letting me pull the CEL manual links up. My CEL light came on once while I heading home from work but once I made it to O' Reily's the light went off and that's when I found out they could not plug in and check.

  1. When you get home, read the Codes thread.
  2. Pull codes.
  3. Post codes.
  4. Reset ECU.
  5. Drive car.
  6. If CEL turns on, pull codes again.
  7. Post the codes again.

I have searched on Youtube and did plenty searches to pull the codes. There has to be a better way to pull codes to diagnose problem then using a paperclip? Right! Today on my way to work i maintained speed between 70-80 and noticed the sputter only happen once. I am wandering if gas or the humidity in the weather can play a role in my sputtering problem.

Currently, my problem is still there. But now I have noticed my idle is really inconsistent. I replaced my engine oil pressure switch because it broke off. Replaced it but now the idle is still up and down and still got the sputtering problem! PLEASE HELP

how old is your filter? in the cars i've owned, a faulty one has been known to be able cause almost as many problems as a bad fuel pump. also, have you checked/tested your fuel pressure regulator?

Read post 11! Ron knows his stuff, do what he asked, and find the problem, or keep throwing parts at it. Yes a paper clip is the diy standard for that car. Only takes a few minutes.

There can be numerous speculations but you will not receive any help or results until you pull the cell codes stored in your ecu. Jumping would be more appropriate with wire rather than a paperclip. both are relatively inexpensive. The codes will give you information on which system is failing, based on the codes you upload we can further help. it can range anywhere from an o2 sensor to a bad ecu, my recommendation is troubleshoot before replacing parts as stated before.

I have owned the car for 2 years and the air filter was already installed. I was thinking about replacing it but currently I have been cleaning it with some good stuff called AWESOME that's a yellow looking product. To Ron or anyone that can, please send me the exact way of how to pull my codes if not then I will have to take it to the Honda dealer which is my last resort. The army base I work and spend majority of my time on doesn't have great service so its hard for me to look at Youtube and do exactly what is being describe. If you post the steps on here atleast I can write it down and go from there.
