Keyless Remote Question

I have a 2000 civic key fob (FCC: A269ZUA106) that was given to me from a friend, but will it work on my 98' civic? Many of the ones on ebay show that the 98-00 are all compatible, but when I tried to program it, I always fail at the step where the remote comes into play.
