Need Help With a Few Choices

Hey folks. Did some searching and found a few 5th gens in my budget. This one grabbed my attention.

Its a special edition. Which according to Wikipedia was a canadian only car. Its a lx (us DX). The "Special Edition" added an AM/FM cassette player, wheelcovers, center armrest console, clock, power steering, dual power mirrors and air conditioning

So pretty much what I want.

Here's a link to the ad for pictures.

http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1994-honda-civic-special-2500-OBO-safetied-W0QQAdIdZ564551747

227k = 141k miles.
Its safetied, which means its been inspected and is "mechanically sound"

Thoughts on this car? Price may seem high but disregard. I'm in canada. Shits expensive.

Thread moved out of the technical section because there isn't a tech question.

LX isn't specific to canada...unless you are meaning that this version of LX is a downgraded version compatible to the US DX.

I don't get how the special edition is supposed to be special. My LX had all of that and more and wasn't labeled anything but an LX.

Didn't you say in another post that you want to get the most gas mileage possible? A sedan wouldn't be the way to go on the route to that journey. It is going to good gas mileage but if you want the most you want something that is really light, like a hatch.

Didn't see this section of the forum. Sorry for that.

As for lx vs dx I was just going by what Wikipedia said. Said our lx was your dx.

Much like our si is your ex. And your si is our sir.

Indeed I do want best possible mpg. Is there that huge of a difference between a hatch and a sedan? The extra doors could be nice but if there's a big difference I will stick to hatches.

I'd be more inclined to consider the '99 CX hatch over the '95 in large part because the '99 looks all stock so it may be more likely to have been better taken care of. The '95 looks like a kid owned it since it has a different colored hood, decal, fogs, etc. Hopefully, the mentioned rust issue on the '99 is minor. I'd prefer to deal with minor/mediocre bodywork over a ragged out engine.

Agreed. The 99 does look a lot cleaner to.

However what would the mpg difference be? They're both cx's which isn't he one to get if I understand right. Aside from the vx/hx of course.

If I'm not mistaken, the 6th gens make about 28/35 MPG cty/hwy and 5th gens make about 32/38. This would be assuming the engines run soundly. Hence, if that '95 was neglected then the engine may do less MPG than it should. Ive seen & heard of 5th & 6th gen. Civics doing 20 MPG due to being neglected and requiring a lot of maintenance. So the safer bet will be whichever has the best running engine.

alright so that 99 is 3 hours away. pretty much takes it off the list. not going to spend 6 hours and $100 to go look at it lol.

there is this one

says as is, so i assume its not saftied. but it looks clean.
i like the mileage. 180 kms is 111k miles. not bad at all.

few more options.
just tossing these out there for your thoughts.

The driver's side rear panel looks as if it was repainted and the paint didnt match exactly. I see a blend spot at the curve of the rear bumper and the color looks very different at the door seem. Given the visible rust on the hatch and opposing rear panel, it may have just been a heavy rust repair, which indicates a potential for further rust damage elsewhere. Heavy rust repair can get very costly.

It looks to me like the engine bay firewall is black while the sides & cross member are white yet the rest of the exterior is silver. That appears to be a potential heavy front-end collision repair job. If thats the case, there could be any number of other issues, such as an uneven chassis with potentially uncorrectable alignment issues.

Its my experience that if you notice worrisome issues in pictures and they are not listed, there is a high likelihood that there will be many more issues in person. Honest people dont waste their time or another potential buyers by omitting obvious known issues. Only liars waste someones time to drive out to see a car in the hopes that theyre knowledgeable enough not to notice issues and buy their clunker.

honestly not worried about rust or badly repaired rust. its sole purpose is a commuter. thats it.
so thats not an issue.

good eye on the firewall though, didnt catch that one.

honestly for some reason i keep going back to that green 95. i have no idea why.

If exterior appearance isnt an issue, then you're better off looking for something with a poor or faded paint job or a few dents. You should still avoid something with potentially heavy rust issues that could grow into larger issues, such as cabin leaks that could effect the electrical system and cause any number of bad issues. At least bad paint or a dent is just cosmetic. You should definitely be able to find a good running car with cosmetic issues that lead it to a lowered price.

I get a pretty solid 28 MPG all around, it probably should be more but i'm kinda heavy footed lol.

I think I should be able to squeeze out a solid 30 mpg from the auto. 90% of my commute is highway @ 55 mph.
I assume you guys have highways that are 75? And I assume these things are geared so 55 will net better mileage.

80 on the interstate here, i do most of my driving on the freeway which is 65. although im usually doing 80 on it.

I don't see why you wouldn't get 30 mpg if you drive conservatively.
