96 vs 98 Automatic Tranny opinion.

Since I like my Honda so much thinking of getting my daughter a 98 LX with 80k on it.

Few guys at work who know much more then me about cars say the 98 has a Tranny problem.

Any advice / opinions would be helpful before I but this.

Thanks in advance,
MP.

It's been my experience that "friends" or "coworkers" who know something about cars are some of the dumbest people on the planet.

Research the vehicle in question by year etc.

Half the reason why I'm here lol but in all honesty they "USUALLY" do wind up with the same opinion I find when I google. Since I was already here for 1 problem figured I'd throw it out there.

Thanks much.

Credibility plays a huge part of it. If one of your co-workers had some personal experience or had researched the situation and found evidence to back the claim, well that is one thing.

People talking out their ass just to sound smart is usually the case, seeing as the car game is about looking/sounding like a badass.

You can type anything you want into Google looking for an issue and you're going to find something. For absolute shits and giggles, I typed in "98 Civic Blinker Dances" and I sure wasn't left disappointed:

All I'm saying is you can find anything wrong with your car as an issue someone else is having if you look hard enough. Is there an issue with the 98 LX trans? Dunno but other people have been having issues, also with the 97 LX, 96 LX, 98 EX, etc. It goes on and on. It's hard to pinpoint what's an ACTUAL issue and what is an issue because people trash their own rides.

Also, wouldn't the 96-98 transmissions be the same? I'd start there and look up actual part numbers and transmission codes to find out what the difference would have been.

And this is where comprehension and common sense play their part. If you can't decipher the bullshit from the real info, well then your life is going to be riddled with bigger issues than worrying about the transmission in a civic.

These are facts. Pretty much all I was trying to say.

Clearly OP, who isn't super knowledgeable on car tech, is questioning something based on claims made by people of questionable knowledge themselves. Everyone can claim anything they want and someone reading information online may not know any better. Tread carefully OP.

Yes, claiming or giving knowledge about something that could potentially harm someone when you really do not know what you are talking about just simply show off while not fully understanding the implications of your actions would be the definition of reckless hype.

Well, I have nothing to show off. You guys know this stuff way better than I do. Instead of giving OP an answer, I was only trying to state be careful with what you read, you can find just about any answer you want to on the internet. If my doing so seemed to show off, or attack your process in anyway (sorry if the quoting you seemed personal), my apologies.

Never heard of it. Buy the car if there are no obvious issues.
Back on topic, this ^

Just be sensible.

Edit: OP, if that's a stock HX, I'd be pretty bent on picking that up myself if it was manual. That thing is pretty close to my house  HX is a bit of a gem when it comes to Civics. The transmission on those are pretty specific to that trim. But overall I heard they are pretty decent.

If receipts do not unambiguously verify regular ATF changes for the Civic, do 3 consecutive drain-refill cycles with Castrol ATF for imports (cheaper than Honda ATF, but perfectly fine). Between each cycle, move the transmission slowly through every gear several times with the engine idling.

Do NOT have the transmission professionally flushed.

I was joking

Back on topic, I guess I just want people to figure this stuff out on their own by pointing them in the right direction. Maybe I'm just burnt out on all of it now. It isn't the OP's fault, I'm just getting tired of seeing the same stupidity over and over again. Not that the OP is, but the folks who fed him this incorrect information who are going to keep on spreading that useless info with zero consequence.
