chance to buy a 98 Civic

Hey guys,

I have the opportunity to purchase a 98 Civic LX from a little old lady. It's an automatic with only 36k miles. Just wondering what you guys think it is worth? It's got a little damage to the rt fender and front cover, which I don't care about, but the interior looks literally brand new.

Also is this car a total pig? I think it only has 105hp.
Are there any cheap ways to get some extra horses?

Thanks for any help.

Low miles is great but it has a automatic bro. If it's cheap enough to buy and you can do a trans swap go for it.

How much are you looking to get it for?

38k miles is STUPID LOW for a 98. If the price is worth it, even picking that up and doing an auto/manual swap would be worth it.

This ^^

That thing is basically brand new. If it's been taken care of (isn't dryrotted from sitting for so long) I would go for it.

Price depends on your area. Around here 6th gen automatics go for around 2500-3000 depending on mileage. Usually around 150k. The low mileage gems like you're referring to, are usually priced around 4-5k, sometimes even more. If you can get it for low enough then I would jump on it.

It's an automatic d series that was made for gas mileage. YES, it's a pig. They all are. Not built for speed.

Only thing worth the money to add power is to swap to a bigger motor or boost it. Everything else is a waste of time and money in my opinion unless your goal is to throw money at parts that won't gain you any real power.

4 options I see:

1 - Get it for cheap, throw a bigger motor in.

2 - See #1 but exchange bigger motor for boost. (can also be added to number one to get even more power <---- most fun but also the most money)

3 - Enjoy the gas mileage

4 - Flip it for some monies.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll grab it and just drive it, as is, for a while. I know she drove it every day, only about two miles each trip, so I'm not too nervous about dry rotting.

BTW, what would it run me to put a turbo on this motor? Also can you put a turbo on an automatic? I really don't feel light changing it to a manual.

Constant 2 mile trips are terrible on engines. Even worse on charging systems. They never get the chance to warm up correctly and are never charging like they should.

As far as turbo cost, you are going to have to research on your own. It depends on your ability to piece together a good kit and how good you are at finding deals. A good tune can cost upwards of $500 or more depending on the tuner and yes it needs tuned.

The d series automatics are notorious for not being able to handle any kind of power. You will destroy it with a turbo'd engine behind it.

the Civic was built as an economical family-affordable car. it's NOT a racecar. so yeah, 106~hp is slow but it was never meant to be fast.

Tell me about it. I live 2.5 miles away from work and this winter is going to suck...

This for sure. The transmission won't hold up at all. And if you do decide to turbo in the future, the tune is by far the most important part.

So what exactly do you mean about the sorry trips? Well I have serious problems with this car? I think being as old as she is (92) it probably took her 10 minutes to drive the two miles. I would think the engine would warm up in that amount of time? And I'm sure some off the rides were 5 to 10 miles. I just don't want to have to throw money at this thing just to get it running good.

A google search on why short trips are bad for cars will give you all you need. The short and sweet is that it never gets a chance to get rid of the water that builds due to combustion. With the constant short trips, you keep building more water in the engine and it never gets a chance to correctly expel it. Water leads to rust and also breaks down oil. Oil that is broken down doesn't do it's job at keeping stuff lubed like they should be. This all causes extra wear and tear on an engine.

You can't prove that she took long enough on her trips to let the car actually warm up to it's proper temp and stay there long enough to do what it needs. Her being 92, I bet she never even "blew" the crud out of the cat or the exhaust either. Also bad. I have seen plenty of cars that run like complete s*** because little old ladies feel the need to buy them and putt around in them never driving them like they should be driven. Most vehicles need to be "gotten" on every once in a while to blow the cobwebs out so to speak.

Most people don't like to hear this but if you are going to be taking so many short trips, you need to be changing your oil more frequently. I seriously doubt she was keeping the oil changes to the low frequency they should have been. Unless you have records, you can't even prove that she was changing the oil at all.

I change the oil in my cars around 2500 miles because I put so low of miles on them per month.

The low miles can be a really good thing, but on a car that is already 16 years old or more, it can just as easily be bad too. It all depends on how the car was taken care of (or lack there of) and how it was stored.

I can't tell you if you are going to have problems or even if you are going to need a bunch of money to get it running proper. YOUR inspection should determine that. If you can't figure that stuff out on an inspection, I highly recommend taking it to a shop that does Pre-buyer inspections. They will be able to tell you what, if anything the car will or won't need. The way I look at it is, Hondas are cheap and the parts are very cheap. Buy it, drive it, enjoy the gas mileage, then sell it for a profit.

Thanks for all that info.

The vehicle is actually my Great Aunt's. I know that she changed the oil every three months, believe it or not, and the car had been garaged for about 90% of it's life. She actually got hit while parked only a few months ago. I drove the car to the insurance office for her and I took the car on the highway, probably up to 70mph. It seemed to run pretty good. Do you think I'd know immediately if it wasn't running right?
