Well, school learned me good and I gots my PhD in Modeling & Simulation this weekend.

And now I've taken this week and half of next week off to relax for a bit. Final grades are in, so everything has slowed down for the semester. I start a 6 month position on December 23rd (Visiting professor - half teaching, half research), and I'm applying for a more permanent position thereafter (Assistant Professor).

Don't get too hung up on the Modeling & Simulation part. Technically, the modeling part is about creating computer-based models of systems so that you can then run simulations to make better decisions about the systems (maybe make a model of a road system so that you can test out different traffic light layouts and see which is most efficient). Simulations can also refer to training simulators, such as flight simulators.

BUT, you can basically simplify my focus to "Educational games." I'm specifically trying to make educational games look and feel more like entertainment games to make them more engaging (and ultimately improve their teaching capabilities).

My new position has me teaching courses at a university half time. The other half is spent researching educational games and similar topics. In other words, I'm pretty much living my childhood dream.

Being in IT at an actuation company, I can actually kind of attest to this.

Once a week at least, someone out in field has issues with some software connecting to an actuator. Usually operator error, but it always "worked in the demo room back in the office".

...No s**t, we show our customers that room so it HAS to be flawless. Plus someone is there holding your hand. Those are also working actuators that don't ever take abuse. Out in the field they're exposed to who knows what elements.

I don't think that's me. I'm the guy who takes the stuff on paper, creates it in real life, then tests it to see if it actually does work.

If it does work, I incorporate it into my next game and profit.
