So quick question is it a bad idea to run premium fuel in a 8 cylinder, 1.5l 1992 honda civic vx?

Also what does everyone believe the best place to get the best gasoline?

Short answer, 93 octane will get you no added benefit over 87 or whatever you're currently using. Your motor isn't a high compression motor so it can't even burn off all of that higher octane gas. You would be wasting money.

As for gas brand loyalty, everyone has their opinion. I use BP and quick trip because they're by my house and work.

Waste of money. Your car was built to run on lower octane. No need and absolutely no benefit to run any higher.

I am a brand whore and will ONLY run Chevron/Texaco in my VR6.

The most common opinions around here are chevron.

Thanks guys for letting me know premium is not a good idea... too bad I just filled up my tank. The extra additives in premium do not help keep stuff cleaner? Could the 93 octane hurt anything? Perhaps that is why my car was randomly throwing the fuel injector code?

It hasn't thrown the code since I put a racing fan and dual core radiator in. I'm thinking the heat was probably making the ECU or some other electronic sensor not function as it should.

Huh I was thinking about how I don't really see any chevrons or texacos around here and I looked on google maps and all four or so chevrons in the general dc/md area are permanently closed, and the two 'texaco's I looked at were actually gulfs

I guess gulf is part of the same company now

I like gulf, there's one down the street from me and it's always the cheapest in the area

Which gas station has the additives in their premium, is it shell? I think that's right, shell v power, or whatever it is they call it? You could just buy your own thing of fuel system cleaner/gas additive though (I'd assume it's the same general effect although I could definitely be wrong about that haha), seems like it would be cheaper in the long run doing it that way occasionally versus filling up with premium every time

The additives aren't just in the premium.

Does anyone actually add that in every time they fill up? Seems like it may burn a bit hotter all the time. Make me wonder whether that's good or bad for electronics lifetime.

I want to drive my car to record lengths.

I have severe paranoid logically reasoning.

I think you're only supposed to add it about as frequently as you change your oil (or at least that's what it says on the bottle, I can't remember the particular brand but I couldn't see it differing too much between brands)

I would stay away from any big discount offering gas station. Some supermarket gas stations can offer the big discounts because the gas they sell isn't high standard gas. It is often diluted and impure.

First off, your Civic has 4 cylinders not 8.

Now, premium fuel requires a higher tempurature to fully ignite than regular 87 octane. That unburned fuel will deposit through your system. Fuel additives are in all the octanes and not limited to just premium.

As for fuel additives, it is correct that they usually recommend to be used roughly every 3000-5000 miles or so. I do otherwise and treat once or twice a year using Techron by Chevron. I also use the additives to half the recommended fuel amount.

Chevron does tend to be regarded as one of if not the best quality fuel. Kentucky started requiring (crappy) reformulated gas in cettain areas, but Chevron refuses to formulate RFG because theur research shows its not as eco-friendly as other purport, so they left Kentucky and other stations bought their locations. That may be why sone of you have seen Chevrons locations change brand. I personally love their gas & Techron. Now I use BP as my runner-up. I dislike Shell fuel. It always seems like my cars have run worse on it, not to mention that Shell also tends to cost more.

Haha when I saw the 8 cylinder thing I was wondering how on earth he managed that =) that clears things up a lot

Do they have that bp rewards thing where you live? At first I thought it was kinda like cvs extra bucks or something but the fine print says something about how you need to buy a certain amount of gas in one visit and then use the rewards on a certain amount of gas in one visit, but if you only fill up when you're almost empty with a bunch at a time it may be useful to you (if they have it there anyway)

At the bps around here they just have the cards sitting in a thing at the pumps for you to take

Local BPs here offer the rewards card. I dont recall the specifics but remember thinking that it wouldnt make much of a difference for the amount of fuel I use in a months time.

Oh yeah you have that super efficient civic

(That's a good thread btw, it's nice to see something about the opposite side of the spectrum, I definitely prefer fuel efficiency to speed.. well, most of the time anyway haha)

OP should check it out, it's the green link in your signature right?

(Edit: yes, that's the one)
