Im new to the forum and I just bought a 98 Civic LX which came with the "Y7" . Any suggestions on the quickest way to get some extra power out of it ?

The only real way to get power out of any d series is forced induction ie: turbo, nitrous, supercharger. Nitrous is the cheapest to buy and install but then you require refills which probably are not cheap, supercharge usually is next best price wise for a d16 but your going to have terrible gas mileage and not as much top end as a turbo. Turbo is the best imo, out of boost it can be tuned to run leaner for better fuel mileage and in boost still make great power. If you go forced induction don't go cheap, make sure you get a chipped ecu and tune the car correctly

Thanks , the only mods I've done so far is header and cold air intake. Is there anything I would need to do to the engine before considering a turbo?

If it's an automatic, don't bother.

Otherwise you'll want to check the health of the motor via compression test. If all is well, then you want to determine a budget, and a realistic power goal within that budget. How much power you want will determine if there's anything else you need to do motor wise.

Of course you'd want to do normal turbo prep, too. Upgraded clutch, fuel pump, injectors, etc.

Don't forget tuning, that will run ~$500 alone.

If you're not familiar with the components of a turbocharged system or how they work, I suggest take a read here:

y8 manifold, ex trans

then just enjoy it until you really want to get serious.

Yeah it's a 5 spd and everyone has been mentioning a Y8 head and harness but that might be the route I take until I get a decent turbo kit

I haven't seen anyone that has done the head swap and said that it was worth the cost and time for the little tiny amount of hp you get out of it after they really sat back and thought about it. Save your money, unless you can get the stuff for free or next to nothing. It's not worth it.

Your definitely going to want a y8 intake manifold or something like a skunk 2 manifold, that y7 manifold is garbage and will make turbo piping a little more complicated

I did a mini-me y8 swap, and Cary is exactly right - it was not worth it.

D-series is great for fuel mileage... not so much for performance. I would only build a D-series if I was driving a 88-91 Civic/CRX... otherwise it's a waste of time/money, whatever you do to it.
I used to be a d-series proponent, but not anymore.

Okay bc I'd hate to blow the engine after investing lots of money into a decent turbo kit. I don't plan on bashing it or racing it , the most I would run is about 8 psi and I wonder if that's too much to ask for out of a stock Y7

I wouldn't go any further than that with stock internals. If the motor is healthy, of course.

Don't do it, my d15b2 blew so I rebuilt it because I was on a tight budget and thought it'd save me money, but I ended up spending almost $700 for everything and it's not even any faster. It's a waste of time and money and I regret it 100%. If you're gonna rebuild something, rebuild a b series and swap it in there. You'll be way happier with the results
