Rust damaged block

Look at the pictures, is this common, can aluminum blocks get rust and eventually get damaged. I'm currently doing a head gasket replace and hope it will work but haven't seen before those holes on the surrounding area of the cylinders. Do you think new head gasket will work properly?

I almost looks like someone put a wet copper sprayed gasket on it, you don't just get rust on their with the head on it. It should be checked for straightness and at the very least resurfaced, same with the head.

Probably machine it is your best bet. I did a head gasket on a propane forklift and it was rusted worse than this. Thats because its propane though. But it didn't seal when i replaced it i dont think. Its not a bad leak now, but im loosing a bit of coolant somewhere slowly.

On the picture where you can see only one finger, that is the worst part but it still has some surface to be covered by the gasket, do you think that it would seal?.

I may not be able to machine it this time, On the picture where you can see only one finger, that is the worst part but it still has some surface to be covered by the gasket, do you think that it would seal?. I mean those imperfections will be covered by the gasket, right?, and compression will not be touching the since they're on the exterior part of the cylinders, I´m not a professional so I'm just trying to figure if once I have the head machined, and put a new gasket on it, would there be a chance to see it back on the road.

all of those cylinder walls are boned. sleeves are in ok shape... but I would replace the block. That thing is never going to seal correctly, coolant can get too much leverage on the gasket due to surface area exposed and cause another leak way before a new block will.

and just as a science lesson, Aluminium does not rust, the furthest form of oxidation is crystalline pitting. Looks like someone tried to salvage a block with some alum filler between cyl 2 and 3 and used a liquid type/copper gasket in addition to a multi-layer to try and get it to seal.

Scrap the block and get a new one

You have just answered my question, aluminium should not rust, at least not the way on the pictures. That´s why I was doubtful about the mechanic whether it was really my motor, the mechanic send me those pics and told me about the need to work on the block, but since i ran out of money I just told him to work on the head and put a new gasket, and he did.

The mechanic completed the job and i have just ride my car yesterday it feels OK. He just told me that we cannot be sure if it will last, probably not, but I´ll enjoy it some months until I can get a new block or new motor.

Just one more thing, Mechanic said "Aluminium blocks usually get rusted" (Since this point I was thinking. Does aluminium rust?) that was on the first contact, he haven´t opened my motor yet, then he sent those pictures, and I was like, mmmmmm, doubtful but it seems he did a good job.

Thank you all. Hope this helps others too.

You would have to look it up for your generation but dont most aluminum block motors have steel sleeves for the cylinder liners? The 7th gens do anyway. So aluminum corrodes when in contact with steel and the rust particles and colour spread everywhere from iron when its in your coolant system.
