Ok so i have the opportunity to buy a 84 crx with 300k miles. The guy wants 600 for it. The inside is really clean, outside has a few dime sized rust spots on the quarters and the paint is pretty bad but for 600 dollars do you think i should get it. Would swap in a d15 vtec if i get it. Let me know what i should do. Thanks

your normal d15's from civcs '88+ won't fit without modification but you can throw a D15A2 off a 84 civic. that's carbed tho.

The d16a1 comes off an Acura Integra 1986-1987

the D16A1 is the 86-89 Integra engine - should be a lot of them around - the 86-87 D16A1 works better in the 1g CRX since it has the vacuum advance ignition instead of the electronic advance found on the 88-89 D16A1, although you could make the 88-89 work - another better option is the 84-87 JDM Civic/CRX Si DOHC ZC "browntop" engine (more hp) - in order to use the D16A1 or the "browntop" ZC, you need to also use the 86-89 Integra transmission, intermediate shaft, axles, knuckles/hubs and shift linkage - all of these parts bolt right in with no modifications - if the CRX is not the Si model, you would also need the complete fuel system (tank, pump, lines, etc.) and most of the wiring from the 1g CRX Si model or 3g Civic Si model in order to run the fuel injection

sorry to confuse you - yes, the 86-87 D16A1 is a "browntop" and the 88-89 D16A1 is a "blacktop" - the 84-87 JDM DOHC ZC is basically like the 86-87 USDM D16A1and also has a brown valve cover ("browntop") and is commonly referred to as the "browntop" ZC as opposed to the 88 and up DOHC ZC which is referred to as the "blacktop" ZC
