This is what you should try before you consider replacing the transmission, which probably has the original old factory Honda ATF in it:
- Buy 9 bottles of this - http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/maxlife/automatic-transmission-fluid/37 - I have found this ATF at Walmart for about $3 per quart.
- Drain the old ATF from your transmission and refill with about 2.9 quarts of fresh ATF.
- Start engine and slowly move the transmission through all the gears (P, R, N, D4, D3, D2), pausing briefly at each gear. Do this several times. Turn engine off.
- Repeat the ATF drain and refill cycle (steps 2-3) two more times.
- Check whether the transmission now shifts gears without slipping.
Sorry to bring back such an old thread, but I need advice. I recently acquired a 2002 acura RSX. Car runs and shifts fine. Just has a stumble at times in 5th gear under 2000 rpm's. When it does this and i press the gas, it downshifts as it should and goes away. It even stops this if it hits 2000 rpm. I repeat, it only shudders/stumbles like this in 5th gear under 2000 rpm. Other than that it drives fine. I know it's an "acura" but still made by Honda. Could I use the max life fluid to do a drain and refill on this tranny or do I need to go with OEM Honda ATF? Thanks in advance.
