Just got my son a 1997 Civic Hatch from a family friend a few months ago. This is the family's first Honda.

Everyone told me about Honda's reputation for the civic's and he wanted a hatchback so here we are. I figured he needed something easy to work on and had parts that were reasonably priced.

I am not a "total" noob when it comes to working on cars, as I have changed alternators, starters, and even dropped in a transmission once (with help). However, I am not delusional enough to even remotely consider myself anything above a novice when it comes to working on cars. Give me an instruction booklet or video and, as long as it's not too intricate, I should be fine.

Well it said post your intro and/or beginning question, so here goes!!!!

1997 Civic Hatch EX (I think it has a del sol engine - D16y8)

To start from the beginning, the family friend modded the O2 sensor to pass inspection before he sold it to us then reversed whatever he did. He said the car needs a cat converter, but he just forgot to mention it. Have no idea whether this has anything to do with the problem below, but extra info usually doesn't hurt.

I was driving the civic to Autozone last night so I could have the starter for my Eclipse tested. At a relatively low RPM (after a gear change from 2nd to 3rd), the car kinda stalled, but didn't die completely. I coasted for about 30-60 yards downhill looking for a place to turn in but the car came back on and continued to drive fine. It happened again a little ways down the road, but died completely and would not start afterword.

I talk with my son and he said it has also happened to him a few times but he's always been able to start it again, plus it's been backfiring lately. This would have been good information to know before I set out for Autozone in an unreliable vehicle. :x He also tells me that his heater is no longer working (blower fan he thinks). I tell him it's probably a fuse, but I will check it tonight when I get home. While waiting for the tow truck, I turn the ignition and hear (what I assume) is the fuel pump priming from behind the drivers seat area.

My plans tonight are to clear out a space in the garage so I can test fuses.

How far I will be able to proceed is going to be relative to the needs of the warden (wife). We just moved and there seems to be an endless list of **** which MUST to have my IMMEDIATE attention.

Any preliminary ideas on the issue?

:welcome: to ClubCivic!

The D16Y8 is the standard EX motor. When's the last time the car had a tune up? If there's no CEL's and it's been awhile for a tune up, try replacing the spark plugs, air filter, and maybe even cleaning the IACV. It kind of sounds like the engine is getting deprived of fuel or air or something required to keep the motor going.

I would also check your O2 sensors; it's possible that they can go bad without throwing a CEL. I had a similar issue for a month before I solved it.... ended up being a bad O2 sensor.

No CEL

He disconnected the battery Thursday night while changing his spark plugs (don't ask me why he disconnected the battery), so I guess it hasn't cycled long enough for the ECU to throw a code.

If something is wrong it should of thrown a code by now. Check your cap and rotor too, how did the plugs look?

Plugs look pretty good to me.

I'll get on with the checks after I get home.

Thank you for your help so far. I appreciate it.

Did the checks like you guys suggested. It ended up being the distributor. I am going to O'reilly's to get a cap and rotor. Looks like "Import Direct" has the best deal with the lifetime limited warranty. Both should be about $50 total. Should I go ahead and replace the plug wires at the same time? They look to be in pretty good shape.

You're probably fine without replacing the wires, but it wouldn't hurt. I'd replace the spark plugs while you're there too though.

Glad you figured it out though..! :thumbs up
