Boost - how soon to tune

If I boost my Civic I'm wondering if its safe to drive it before getting it tuned. I mean, how far can you drive it without causing damage? The nearest tuning shop is about 60 miles from where I live. Also, do you have to do a OBD1 conversion to be able to tune it (D16Y8).

its best to tune as soon as poisble otherwise your driving a ticking time bomb. If you get a chipped ecu you will need to convert to OBD1

Phearable.net has some good info for you

Damn, I was afraid of that. I have no idea how I'm going to get a turbo installed and get it to the shop - trailer it I guess.

I almost forgot. My neighbor gave me an ECU that's supposedly chipped. But its the same as the one in my car and when I took the cover off I couldn't see anything that looked modified. He said it was setup for his turbo. I think he's full of crap. I ran it for a while and the car seamed to run better with the stock ECU.

You better learn to tune it yourself for idle and low load so you can safely ease the car to the shop.

I'll have to look again. Its an OBDII though and I thought those couldn't be tuned. I guess the bios could be flashed or something.

just open up the waste gate so no exhaust goes throught the turbo, seems like a pretty simple concept. Waste gate bypasses the turbo, therefore no boost, which means you can drive it to the shop, set the wastegate where it should be, and get it tuned.

obd2 can not be tuned
this is good example of a wrong statement ;) sure the ecu can't be tuned BUT when you throw a piggyback on such as Emanage wala its tuned ;) and yes hondata is OBD1 ONLY!!!! and you do indeed have to change to obd1from obd2 in order to use it ;) the only obd2 that can be tuned is in the new k series ecu's which can be reflashed

I guess I should have made my statement more clear. I was talking about the stock ecu cant be chipped

off topic question: when you take your car to a dyno do you have to have a chipped ecu to tune it or can you keep the stock one and have the shops computer hook up to your car ?
