I used to have Nextel back in 2002.
It was cool back then because there was no such thing as the "iphone", touchscreen smartphones, twitter/Myspace/Facebook, cellphones with a camera and I think text & picture messaging was unheard of..im not sure.

My family & some friends had Nextel too. What we would do is, if someone "chirps" me and I don't answer right away then they won't speak. I wouldn't be "chirping" back in forth with someone especiall if I were standing in line at the Bank, etc..

I don't know why it's not popular anymore.. I liked it because it was Live. Unlike text messages, you have to type out words and wait until the other person answers.

it is NOT real time.. that is exactly the problem it is simplex meaning only one person talks at a time..

a cell phone call is real time or duplex...

here is the ONLY use chirp had...

about a million years ago when there was NO free cell to cell.. businesses said how can we cut cost.. what can we do.. nextel said.. well what we will do is put RADIO repeaters out there AND cell towers.. if you want to use the RADIO we will make it UNLIMITED at one low price.. so construction crews of 40+ people could communicate at a reduced cost.. this is the POINT of direct connect.. fast forward several years.. and it caught on with the wanna be gangsters.. they are not very intelligent.. and generally attention whores.. so ANYTHING loud and obnoxious (like direct connect) was PERFECT for them..

then end..

so basically.. stupid people thought it would b e cool.. to communicate in a less efficient way because it was different.. TOTALLY irrelevant as to if it WORKED better.. people of that lower level of intelligence does not normally concern itself with the actual workings of something.. they see "dawg dat s**t is different aint not body got it.. i need to get it so i can be da first on da block to have it" which makes a whole lot of sense since he would have NO ONE to direct connect..

Simplex is one way communication only, meaning a mouse, or keyboard, etc.. Half duplex is one talks at a time like a walkie-talkie.. or the "chirp", Full Duplex is "real time" where both can transmit simultaneously.

what you said about CERTAIN computer interaction may or may not be correct... but with a walkie talkie (direct connect) where only one way at a time.. it is called simplex.. in fact you could take that whole thing and change the word "over" to "chirp tone" and it would quite literally describe nextel..

if I wanted to have a long conversation I would just Call the person.

you know what's worse imo.. Text Messaging. I hate when I see people staring at there cellphones typing non-stop and having Long conversations..lol. Can't they just pick up the phone and Call the person? lol geez
Especially while they're Driving, at least "chirping" is a safer alternative, just saying.
