a blowoff valve releases air that is headed towards the closed throttle body in between shifts. If you didnt have one, pressure would build up within the intake and possibly cause compressor surge shortening the life of your turbo.

A wastegate is a little more difficult to understand. Boost multiplies with rpms. The faster that turbo is spinning, the more boost it is creating. However, there are limits to the amount of boost you want fed into your engine, however you cant stop the turbo. The wastegate releases this surplus pressure into the atmosphere. An internal wastegate comes already as a component on your turbo and an external is seperate. Most homemade turbo kit turbos that you would use have an internal wastegate. I think the only difference is that there are limits to the size of an internal wastegate (i think this only matters for high boost)
and that it may have slightly worse flow characteristics due to the internal wastegate as opposed to the external.

Someone please correct me if any of this is incorrect.
Also, for the record.. dont ever do something to your car based upon how it sounds in the fast and furious.

:wstupid:

what you said sounds about right. the bov is located on your charge pipe or close to your i/c. wastgate is closer to the turbo itself=)
