Hmmm... did you read it online? I am going to have to do some google searching on that. I have heard the exact opposite to be quite honest.

To be honest, I don't understand where the science is on NOT running it. It coats better so it doesn't matter if the engine has been running non-synthetic as it would relubricate everything and it would be better lubricated than it was before...

Only thing I have heard against synthetic would be from our Mobile 1 rep here at work that said to not mix the 2 when one or the other is already in the car. Example: the car has regular and you are a quart low and add full synthetic. It will get you by for a very short period until you can change your oil as it is better to run something than to let it go dry, but shouldn't be long term. This is because (at least from my understanding from him) the synthetic would break down the lubricating properties of the regular oil thus basically making a low oil condition all over again. To say it in the least scientific terms.

The science is usually based on the fact that say someone runs regular non synthetic or doesnt keep up oil changes, the next owner goes to full synthetic and all the detergents knock all that crud and burnt s**t free. Then it clogs the filter or goes through the engine and ruins it. That was the only explanation I have ever read on it. I dont know if I truly believe it, but it makes a small bit of sense. As to a car running like s**t because of the type of oil you use, I do not believe it. You could put $2.00 a quart autozone s**t in it and the car should run the exact same. You may end up with a crusty gummed up oiling system if you do not change the oil regularly in that case. Here's a for instance....

That dsm for the better part of 5 years had been run on nothing but autozone oil, regular changes and using a good filter. Engine was very very VERY clean with the 168k it had on it before the build.

On a related note, I called up the closest Dodge dealer to see what an oil change would be on my srt, 90 f**king buck for full synthetic. f**king CRAZY

Yeah, the crud coming free makes sense too

So I'm looking at (obviously now) going with Mobil 1, should I go for the high mileage or just the regular?? Also is the viscosity the same across the board in the sense that I'm running 5W30 now, should I get 5W30 synthetic?

I would just run regular M1 synthetic.

Stay with the same weight. The engine was built and tested to run on 5w30. Now if you are in a climate like Alaska where it is below freezing for months I would run a different weight but that is another story.

Its just better to do it yourself sometimes.
I was, was going to do it on my 05, but as it turned out someone put a non OEM drain plug on it with locktite.
After almost completely rounding that off I decided to call the dealer thinking they may have a better chance of getting it out. Service guy said they could try but cant guarantee anything, it really doesnt matter at this point but if they can get it off at least Ill already be at the dealer and they can hook me up with an OEM plug. I asked him how much an oil change was with full synthetic and he said 90 bucks. After my holy s**t comment I said I would just bring the s**t with me and he told me that was cool.

Your welcome and it isn't a dumb question. I have had customers ask me if weight is different between synthetic and regular oil. Like you said, you never know.

yeah, other than my first car, and now this car, I've always had either new, or used with factory warranty's and regular maintenance packages. I've never had to think about things like this lol
