lethal really you are gonna sit there and say that smoking 2-3 packs a day didnt contribute to his stroke? here is a quote from the american heart assn.
Studies show that cigarette smoking is an important risk factor for stroke. Inhaling cigarette smoke produces several effects that damage the cerebrovascular system. Women who take oral contraceptives and smoke increase their risk of stroke many times. Smoking also creates a higher risk for peripheral arterial disease and aortic aneurysm.

duuuuhhhh smoking killed him, my grandmother who was a great woman died of the same thing,so your statement of how it will suck when it happens to me is null and void. i have little to no tolerance for people's ignorance and i feel little pitty for a man who was told for the last 2 seasons of that show that he was going to die if he kept up that pace. what the hell does he go and do? smoke and drink some more. my family is proud of me fyi, and a stroke is a preventable thing, take care of yourself and you dont get a stroke, seems pretty simple to me.

I have to agree with buzzbombtom on the cigarettes killing him. If you saw the last episode, they showed a scan of his brain, and the doctor pointed out a calcium build up in one of the scans, and told one of his sons that it had been building up for years.
The stroke was a long time coming, those things build up slowly over time and when they hit, it's usually one massive hit. Not everyone that has a stroke is because of cigarettes, but in this case I think it's safe to assume that it contributed mightily.

So, you're still glad someone finally died on the show?

i think its a tease... they boast the job has 195 deaths a year and overall it seems not so deadly...its like taking a slut out to dinner and not getting head, just not right

I think the main problem I have is that you are a completely heartless person. I would bet a guess that if your family knew you were happy that someone died on this show, especially someone like Phil Harris, they would be ashamed and embarrassed. Then again, maybe not. Maybe by now they have come to expect such things from you.

I didn't mean that smoking is going to come back around to you, I meant that when you die or are on your death bed, you are going to think it is a little less funny.

I won't say that smoking killed him. Can you actually prove it? All that we have been given is that he died from a stroke, which can be brought on by MANY things. My great grandmother had one and she didn't smoke a day in her life.

There is a good possibility that he did die from it, but right now it is just assumptions.

I would bet (like said above) that it had more to do with the stress, sitting for days a time in that chair, terrible diet, junk food, and smoking. It isn't just smoking that killed him and I stand by that. I could easily be proven wrong, but I think it has to do with EVERYTHING coupled together. I would bet he would have died the same way weather he smoked or not.

I dont think that Tom said he was glad or happy that someone died. I just think that he was simply pointing out the fact that the show is called "Deadliest Catch", is supposed to be one of the deadliest jobs on earth, and after eight years he is the first person to die. I dont think that Tom thinks it is a good thing though. Regardless, please try to calm down guys. Opinions are great to have and to stand for, but lets not get too heated up.

Anyway. My input.....I kind of have to agree with Tom in a way. With his lifestyle, is it really a surprise that he died? Ironically though, it was not the fishing that directly killed him. Yes if he had a less stressful job, was able to walk around more.....he may have lived longer. But normally the fatalities of deep sea fishing are from falling in, getting hooked, getting injured from the job itself etc. I find it ironic that the first person to die on this "deadly" job, died from something anyone on dry land could die from.

There has been plenty that have died over the seasons since they started filming. They follow what only 4-5 boats and there are TONS that are out there during their respective seasons. They have documented a couple that have went down and I do remember one of them had 5 members die and 2 were never found. The ship wasn't followed on the show, but one of the ships were involved in the search attempts and the crew filmed that.

This is evening television. I doubt they are going to follow ships going down all the way even if the film and crew are there to catch it. Pretty morbid to actually sit there and watch episodes hoping that a ship will go down just because of the title of the show. Even more morbid to exclaim that it is about time.

so lethal your telling me that you watch crab fishing for the crab fishing? its all the same after the first season, its not derby style so i dont get the big draw to watch the show (to me). i understand that there have been ships that have gone down and people have died in the last 8 years, but there is something like 20-30 boats in the ENTIRE fleet discovery covers about 1/3rd of the ships, all of which have had no issues.

that's just sad that some people watch that show only for the purpose of seeing someone die'ing. if they want to see that just go to your local hospital and wait around in the icu/ccu department or go to war

I do in fact watch the show because of the fishing. My grandfather (dad's dad) was a big boat fisherman. When my dad was a teenager, my grandfather went to sea with his best friend, my aunt's first husband, and his other crew members. There was a huge storm and all they found was parts of the boat that ultimately washed to the closest shore. My dad and many others formed a bunch of search parties and never found anything but a few parts.

I watch in most part because seeing these guys gives me a sense of who my grandfather was. I obviously never met him, but through seeing real life fisherman like this, I can actually visualize him doing something that he loved.

I also watch because I have met and listened to a couple of these guys and their stories in person. 2 of the boats (they aren't ones that are filmed but are part of the fleet, one is a sister ship to the Time Bandit and the other a sister ship to the Northwestern) have guys on them that I met back before the show started filming. Years before in fact. They are great guys and have stories that are unbelievable. Most of the ships in the fleet are locally based to me and through ex fisherman friends of my grandfather I have met quite a few of them.

I also watch for the same kind of reason that I watch "Dirty Jobs". It is interesting and shows me insight to other lines of work that are very interesting and intriguing. That show doesn't have anyone that died. Should I stop watching it?
