Curious: Engine/Transmission auto-shutoff switch?

Hello fellow 6th gen civic lovers,

I own a '98 civic that I use as a commuter 80 miles a day.
It has almost 130,000 miles and I absolutely adore the car.

I get a standard oil change on it every month (It burns 2/3 of that a month) and keep it "healthy", meaning I repair it with all stock parts and keep it in great condition where it counts. The body has some dings, but it's almost 15 years old. I consider it to be a modern day classic as it is completely and utterly reliable, comfortable, and super fun to drive.

Anyway, on to this main reason for this post.

Today I took a curve around 20-30mph after it had rained, and the tires had lost tread and I did a 720 spin.
I ended up facing backwards, yet rolling in the same direction as I was originally going.

I figured that I blew the transmission, as it took me a second to realize I was rolling backwards in Drive.
However, the car had turned off. So I was freely rolling backwards (I threw it in neutral when I noticed) and the engine had been killed as the RPMs were at 0 and battery light was on.

My question is this: Is there something in the Civic computer that knew what happened and killed the engine/transmission? After I safely backed it into a parking lot (Yes, driving backwards with the driver behind me wide-eyed as we stared at each other) the car turned back on in an instant, went into drive, and I went on my merry way. There was a slight burning smell that happened after the incident, but not more than a minute.

Any ideas? Or something else happen that I'm not aware of? I really thought I fubar'd my beloved civic.

Thanks for your time in reading this!

Sounds awesome! Manual or auto? Drive it around a few times and just get a good feel for it. I bet you'll be fine. Good save! :thumbs up

lol did u really ask if it was a auto or manny........
What? Did I miss him saying what it was? Or are you suggesting what he just explained can not happen in one or the other... Loosing control, rolling backwards in gear, going to neutral.

Hey guys,

It's an automatic (Original transmission, gets tranny flushes once every 30k [Not the full flush, drive 5miles, flush, drive 5, etc]). I wish I could be as cool as ace ventura, but this was the first time something like this ever happened to me. I was surprised at how calm I was, but more importantly, I am still trying to figure out how the car:
a) turned off
b) rolled backwards freely while in D4
c) did not blow out the transmission

I tried googling but so far came up empty. My google-fu is weak on this.. Not sure what descriptive words to use to explain myself fully.

Thanks again!

Google fu.. Im stealing that! Sorry, cant help the rest. Is it possible it jumped to neutral and you just thought you manually did that?
