So I have nothing to do right now so I will start this out. I was going to do a step by step on customizing some headrests into a 6th gen coup.
Was getting tired of watching all the guys catching up to our system at work. My part timer got his jensen flip out and his VW golfs hatchie tubed and flushed with all type r and v-12 equipment.
So I decided to add some alpine headrests to the alpine system.

Now 7 inch monitors look horrible in hondas cuz they dont fit, so I picked up two TME-M006sa monitors from e bay.

Both these little f**kers MSRP @ $600.00 each. RGB inputs on them. =)
So they are going to have a better picture than the front monitor.

But thats not the end. Going to end up with a third monitor so I could get the brain box to run the screens. That system MSRP @ 699.99 We picked up the third moitor and brain box brand new for $79.99 and the two satnd alones for $150.00 and it looks like we are going to get the $550.00 tv tuner for $100.00
so Im pretty stoked.

Unfortunately they have no headrests shrouds. Alpine didnt make them. So the step by step will also be showing how to customize them with fiberglass =)

Will be starting probably next week

that sucks. Im the install senior at store 355 and we can customize anything we want. The full timer just fiberglassed and tubed the part time installers hatch in his golf. came out nice.
havent had much time to move on with the project. Was waiting on the third screen with the brain box and the tv tuner. But here is where im at right now.

After wrapping the monitor in saran wrap. Support it to a foundation. Use easy remove artist tape to cover the entire monitor. The easy remove tape doesnt rip anything. Same tape and process you use to tub a trunk.

I want to exact molds so I will be rubbing the tape down with turtle wax for a releasing agent, so I can get two identical mold to work with.

Then its just gently brushing on a few layers if fiberglass at a time. The shop ran out of fiberglass so I didnt bother moving on. Got some fiberglass wed. so friday the screen will probably get glassed.

heres the pic of pre glassing

the dent in the back is there for the monitor cable. You dont need to get the back perfect. The important parts are the sides. They need to be hugged to the monitor with no gaps. The pic is not very good but the sides are nice and flush so when the monitor is inserted its not all wavy around the edges

pic aint working.

and yeah... i was reading around toolkit and there are alot of stores that are doing custom work b/c of too much competition with local shops. i spoke to my sup about it and he said if we get alot of ppl wanting it, we might get into it a bit, but no fiberglassing for now cuz most of us dont know how to. but i did order window tinting materials! ;)

so everything is now on track. Third monitor and brain arrived via the guys in brown today. So all in all it has saved us quite a bit of money
$2000 in Alpine headrests for $350 but it has been a journey. TV tuner will arrive on monday. Going to give a screen to my installer for helping me out the project when I have to run the floor.

was worried the monitor cable would be missing, but just like the ebay description 100% brand new missing manufactures cable. Ordered that for $18.00 screen $79

So trial and error. Before we started to fiberglass the shrouds we started talking on hardner ratio to fiberglass. While Tyler (other installer) was fiberglassing the wheel wells of his acura for four 10's. AND HOW HOT FIBERGLASS GETS WHEN HARDENING!!!
So unfortunately there will be no fiberglassing. Not willing to cook pixels.

So, cut a back mount out of 1/2 inch mdf for the new shroud, With edges of abs to allow to pressure fit. We will then cut the foam and fabric, the re lay the headrest fabric back into the shroud and put the monitor into it. So the monitor flushes with the fabric.

so all waiting for fiberglass I do have to apologize.

looks good cant wait to see the finish product.. screen is little to small for me. for someone in the audio business i dont know why u still quote msrp.. sale price and street price is most of the time always way lower then msrp.

The reason we went with the 5.6 is a 7 inch wouldnt fit in the headrest.

So your store does custom work? Lucky.
We do very few custom jobs, but we have neither time nor space for it all.

One headrest done. The two pics are one.

After the foam was removed and the shroud was place into the cutout and the material returned and the second is of course with the monitor and cable added and finished. Still have one more to do and install them.
Kinda bummed on one thing though, The headrest have the remote eye built into the monitor. I was thinking to have the video go to the tv tuner first then to the second headrest and the flip up screen. But If I was watching tv or a movie I would have to put the remote over my head and point it to the back to change the channells.

I will show more of the foam cutting and shroud fitting for the next headrest
