d15b7 del Sol starts then immediately dies

Hey clubcivic! I gotta 93 sol with a intermittent starting problem. Okay I go get gas, start it back up and idles at 1500 for 1 second then dies. I try to start it again and get only a crank, I try again and rpm needle jumps to the 500 mark for .05 seconds and dies. Only way I get it to run after this is by push starting the car. I notice it only happens when the engine is warm and been stopped a couple of times. (short trips)

Fuel pump?

Low compression symptoms?

Main relay?

Thanks for any insight!

You say it only happens when warm? Sounds like a main relay. When it s old, it gets hot from current running through it, and the solder connections crack and become loose. Don't think that will cause it to die but it will cause it not to start.

When my main relay was bad it would just cause it to not start. :O it's possible though.

I'm not sure if it's the relay because it starts fine, say for even 2 weeks then it does it. I gave it a full tune up 2-3 months ago, fuel filter, air filter, plugs and wires, cap and rotor. It did it even before i gave it that tune up also. Just gave it a ecu idle relearn. Hope it stops the problem but not sure, everything seems the same.

Also a thing I notice is if I stop at a redlight, turn on the lights, cd player, or heater (no ac) It will idle low like 550 rpms for 3 seconds then come back up to normal 750 idle.

When I bought it had a fuel tank leak (hole in it). Had a mechanic replace it don't know if it has anything to do with it.

When it dies it goes its like Vroom (starts up) Idles for 1 second, then it goes sput sput sput while it dies. When I try to restart it seems almost like a misfire.

Would this be a cause of low compression? Really curious about that.

NO CELS, were ever thrown.

Sounds a lot like your idle air control valve. Try cleaning the IACV and reinstalling, see if that helps. It's a quick and easy process, and definitely worth a shot.

Broke (high school student) No spark plug sockets. Or compression tester or the $ to borrow one. I will clean the Iacv and throttle body promptly. And report back!

Its just a 5/8 socket. The spark plug socket usually has a rubber piece in to hold the plug, but you can use a needle nose to grab it.

Well damn, the bolts on the IACV are rusted to hell I can't get them off lol. What do you guys use for rusted bolts? Wd-40 didn't work.

Soak them in some kind of penetrating oil like PB Blaster for a few minutes, then take your wrench or ratchet and instead of just pulling, take the palm of your hand and smack the ratchet/wrench a few times to try and break the seal.

You guys I tried all that. I got some pb blaster sprayed it waited for about a hour and cant even break the bolt lose on the stock intake air box. UGH!!! Am I just weak? lol. It wont even budge. Should I get a breaker bar? Its a 10mm bolt btw.

Might need to buy new bolts just in case. Take your ratchet/wrench and try tightening and loosening a few times to try and break then loose. Taking an extension and a hammer and taking the head if the bolt works too

Got those ones out. But now stuck on the clamp where the intake meets the throttle body. It really rusted and the screw is stripped. I feel hopeless don't really feel like getting raped from a mechanic.

Please any advise on getting the clamp off? I was thinking about using a a saw to the intake but I wanna be able to reuse it. I really wanna get to this problem, it happened again. Seems like when i'm low on gas and fill up it does it most.

You shouldn't have to remove your intake arm in order to remove the IACV..

Just the two bolts and the connected coolant hoses.

Well I wanted to clean out the throttle body also. And to see if it's leaking air.

Got yeah. It should be a bolt with a flathead groove in the top. If the flathead portion is stripped out, try using a socket. If all else fails then maybe try some pliers or vice grips.

Lost my vice grips lol. I'll try to borrow a pair. Have you ever noticed when you shut of your engine you hear air going thru the manifold still? Like a hissing noise for 2 seconds. Is this normal?
