d16 block questions

What is the difference in the d16a6 and d16y8? Is the block the same? I am wanting to get a block for my d16a6 that I am running, and get it bored over and basically build the heck out of it. Then I want to take the tin and swap it over to my newly built d16 block. I'm not into a swap for a b series. I don't want to put a different tranny and everything else that comes with it.

Pretty sure the bore, stroke, deck height are all the same on the D series 1.6 motors. The differences really come from pistons and head assemblies, etc. I think the Y8 comes with a knock sensor though and some of the others that didn't have it, like the Y7 are tapped for one. If you're going with an OBD1 setup, get something like a Y7 so you don't even have to worry about it. Otherwise, if you're going OBD2, pretty sure you'll need that sensor.

A6 is non-vtec, the Y8 is vtec.

A6 is 9.1:1 vs the Y8 9.6:1

Y8 has ~20 more hp, and slightly more tq.

This is based on stock assembly. But really the head you put on it and the pistons you buy for it, correct? If you're building something, especially if you're boring it out, you're not using the stock A6 or Y8 pistons, compression will be whatever you pick up for it really.

If using the A6 head, yea, you won't have the VTec option. If you go Y8 head and do like a minime swap, you just need all the other crap for it too.

From just a bare block, no crank, pistons, rods, head, nothing, I believe they are pretty interchangeable.

Yeah, if it's being bored and built I wouldn't think there would be much of a difference. Though I did a little research, it looks like the A6 has stronger (steel or iron) maincaps, and the Y8 has aluminum.

Yea, but dat weight reduction tho...

I didn't really consider anything that had to be bolted on since he could simply redo the bearings and pull main caps off the A6 if he wanted to, which according to your statement, may be a better option, so long as they're in good shape of course.
