i hear d-series have some of the best trannys to
No not true. They arent built to withstand the rigirs like the B series are. Plus most of the B Trannys are geared closer and have a better final drive..

Does anybody have a link on this issue? Ill post it up if I find one.

i would get rid of the motor you have now though it is a non-vtec motor
HX D16y5 = VTEC-E, 115hp. The hx is a vtec, a strange one, but it is still vtec. However the d16y5 is somewhat of a mixture of a DX and an EX. The intake manifold of the hx is similar, even though the ex still flows better. The hx head is designed similar to the ex, except it has roller rockers, another plus. Unfortunately the hx share the same exhaust manifold as the dx, lx, cx...having 2 oxygen sensors and a cat inside the manifold. Another disadvantage is how vtec works, the hx works on 8 valves I believe until 2500rpm then vtec engages all 16 valves, thus better fuel economy. It also has the EGR valve on the intake to the left of the fuel rail (egr=exhaust gas recirculation). The tranny kinda sucks too, if you have the automatic it is a CVT continuously variable transaxle, if you have the manual you have very long gears which wouild suck for a 1/4 mile but highway boosting for instance would be cool. If you decide on turbo, I would do a mini-me swap with the ex head, intake manifold, ecu, exhaust manifold, and tranny if you want to. The hx is boostable while retaining all the parts i just described, but fuel management is tricky. The apexi VAFC wont work because even though the hx is vtec, apexi doesn't have their unit to work with it. You could probably go with an SAFC or an FMU if you plan on staying under 10psi. Hope this helps.....

I also own a 98 hx 5-speed and im still debating on either a mini-me/turbo or b18c1 swap. I guess i'll get the cash first and decide one i have it.

Yeah, cash is definitely an issue. I thinking of building up cheaper stuff like the suspension, brakes, etc. and then doing the engine. That said, I know what you mean about the tranny. That tall first gear is a b***h, man. My friend wants me to teach him to drive stick and I'm like, "not on this car, buddy."

if i were you i would swap a D16Y8 then turbo it... and that would all prolly run you about the same $$$ as a b16 or b18 swap... and youll have two things that b's dont have.. TORQUE and GOOD FUEL ECONOMY!!! muahahaha

d-series trannies are much more affordable than b trannies. this means it's a lot easier to find them at junkyards, and create a semi-custom gearbox with the final drive ratio of your choice.

yo quick question, im picking up a b16 this week, just wondering how your able to boost so much on a stockc block. i picked up a 67 trim turbo, bout to do setup in 3-4 weeks, but i heard boosting that high on a stock block isnt that safe, how long you been running it. a little more info would be nice.

i have a fully built d16y8 and at 12psi it produces 255whp and that is without tuning.... the motor is good up to 22lbs....
i stuck with the single because if u blow it .. it is alot easier and cheaper to come by plus i get more respect with the sohc

Well I found a shop nearby that will do a B18b swap for just a bit over 3 grand (2000-2200 motor/tranny/etc., 1050 install), so I might end up doing that. That way, I'll have plenty of room for growth, what with the possibilities of a boosted LS and/or LS/VTEC. My friend just bought a 240sx with a Sylvia engine swap from that same shop. I forgot what engine he got in it. The 2.5 liter one. Nobody else does that kind of work around here. Anyway, does 3 grand sound like a reasonable price for a swap?

Silvias didn't come with 2.5L motors. The RB25DET is a Skyline motor.

Also, the LS swap is a great idea and a nice platform for boost.
No VTEC, but still DOHC and fun to work with.
For $3k for a complete LS swap, that is very reasonable.
Ask them if they'll put on aftermarket parts while they do the swap.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't go LS/VTEC, as you will most likely f**k it up.

not to mention that after you spent that 3 gs on the swap you would need to lift the engine and tear it right down and rebuild it which'll cost you near a g there and then you'd need to buy the head have it machined to fit, etc. you're already past the 5 grand mark.

yea I can back up that the d15b has a 3-stage VTEC that pushes out less than 130 hp

depending on which d15b it is

EDIT: The D15B doesnt have the three stage VTEC, the 3-stage vtec is only found on 95+ JDM EK Civic chassis. The D15B is just like the D16Z6 as far as head/intake/solenoid and overall valvetrain. For the block, it uses a D15Z1 (VX) block.... theres a torque monster right there hahahaha
