Anyone ever thought that perhaps the Myans either A. Got bored chinking out a calender a couple of thousand years past their time... B. Said "What the f**k are we doing? Why do I give a flying rat's ass about 2012? I'm done with this s**t."

Not exactly

The mayan calendar does not end, it resets.
The mayan long calendar is a linear calendar that spans a little over 5,000 years. It does not have dates as we known them with our cyclical calendar. From our best estimates, the calendars "reset" date is 12/21/2012. At that point, it starts over on another cycle.

Just as our calendar only spans 12 months and ends on december 31st every year, theirs tracks a ~5,000 year cycle.
Just as our calendar starts back at january first, theirs start back at day one.

the cataclysmic predictions are just new-age hype.

Do some reading

Mayan End Age 12-21-2012
1159 days, 4 hrs, 24 mins, 23 secs left for Age of Transition to begin!
"The Hopi and Mayan elders do not prophesy that everything will come to an end. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age into another. The message they give concerns our making a choice of how we enter the future ahead. Our moving through with either resistance or acceptance will determine whether the transition will happen with cataclysmic changes or gradual peace and tranquility. The same theme can be found reflected in the prophecies of many other Native American visionaries from Black Elk to Sun Bear." - Joseph Robert Jochmans
