There was something on the news recently about a guy that knows all about Mayan culture and whatnot and he was saying how stupid it was to believe because there are other calendars that go way past our lifetime. I'll look for the news story.

Not exactly

The mayan calendar does not end, it resets.
The mayan long calendar is a linear calendar that spans a little over 5,000 years. It does not have dates as we known them with our cyclical calendar. From our best estimates, the calendars "reset" date is 12/21/2012. At that point, it starts over on another cycle.

Just as our calendar only spans 12 months and ends on december 31st every year, theirs tracks a ~5,000 year cycle.
Just as our calendar starts back at january first, theirs start back at day one.

the cataclysmic predictions are just new-age hype.
