it has some shaft play, but I dont know how much is to much. The only turbos i have been around are new

If its got shaft play and blade damage then your better off just buying a new turbo. Rebuilding turbos is iffy too. Because where the new parts arent going to seal comletely into the old worn parts.

Plus with as much as it may cost to rebuild it you may save a few bucks on a new turbo or just spending a few more on a new one.

just my opinion: tear that one all apart just for experience like you said, but i would just keep an eye out for a new turbo. idk, im a huge huge DIY guy..do everything myself on my car but.. rebuilding a turbo.. just doesn't sound fun to me at all.
