I have an engine problem and need help

I need help with an engine problem. I have a 88 CRX dx. I was redlining it one day and all of a sudden it just cut off. The check light did not come on and as i tried restarting it and it turned over but never started. My friends say it might have jumped timing but im not sure how to check for that. Any advice will be helpful thanks.

if you jumped the timing you may want to have a shop check it for bent valves, remember these motors are old and can't handle bouncing off the rev limiter without eventual damage.IMO.

ah yes...sometimes i enjoy redlining my car too...lol...you were redlining on purpose?? isn't it there to mean 'warning' or 'danger, your revving too high which will cause damage to the engine'. Thats why you drive it almost until redline or until your powerband ends at least which isn't all the way into redline.
lol, im just playin...good luck figurin it out...i heard the dx engines of our gen don't take well to bein driven to 7000 rpm to often.

i think you jumped the timing belt, thus creating a situation where as in which the valves probably hit the pistons causing the timing belt to break. when this happens it usually doesnt even make any noise it just cuts off. thats why when you turned it over it turns but doesnt start. take the timing cover off and check it out and let me know.

New engine?

Also when I try to start it, it backfires. But i was also wondering would it much easier to ditch it engine and put in a HF engine in it?

hf engines have less hp than the dxengine, don't swap that motor in.

You probably jumped the timing belt. If you broke it the cam would not rotate and as a consequence, neither would the distributor. Your distributor might have worked loose and messed up your ignition timing but that is less likely...oh yeah. I had to fix your fawkin' color in the quote...that was hurting my eyes. 8)

Why the f**k do people redline their cars?
becuase they think they keep gaining power all the way to redline.

ever heard of the words power band?
powerband dies after or around 5600 rpm, so it's useless to keep goiong in a general geear if you are not making power or torque .

Problem solved

The problem was the the screw that held the rotary button inside the distributor worked loose. Aperantly that it a problem that happens to 4th generation civics and 2nd generation integras. Thanks for the advice fellas.

humm, i've never heard of that being a common problem, but a rarity from someone not securely tightening the screw back in after a tune up,IMO., but glad to here it's fixed.
