I've had the same thing ahppen twice with two different problems. Once it was the distributor. Inside there is a little pins that sends the spark to the cap, yeah that broke. The second problem was a fuse. Look for the i think its the "alternator solenoid valve" fuse. Try those and see if its either.

Also when I try to start it, it backfires. But i was also wondering would it much easier to ditch it engine and put in a HF engine in it?

NO!!!!! Don't put and HF in it don't even say those letter togeather. I roll a HF and it blows, the onlything tight about it is i get 32mpg. U have no power. Going up long hills is a b***h and my car is gutted and a CFhood. just tryin to give some good advice.

werd on the fuse, i had the same problem once with my last hatch, but it was a easy fix, but my fix isn't going to be the same as your, trust me.
