what does a throw bearing do?
ive read that i'll have to change it with the clutch, how much would it cost to get both changed?
What symptoms lead to the conclusion that the clutch needs to be replaced?

If a noise is being made while your foot is off the clutch pedal, this is the throw out bearing. If it makes a noise when the clutch pedal is being pressed, it's your input shaft.

It's the reverse. The throw out bearing is only engaged when the clutch pedal is pushed down. The transmission is engaged when the pedal is up.
