98 civic, 183k miles. Timing belt is at the point of needing changed. Went to start it this am, cranked over normal, engine caught and started to run and died immediately. Went to crank again, cranked but didnt sound like the whole motor was turning and wouldnt start. I never heard any knocking sounds, either when it tried to run or when I cranked it after. Is it possible the belt broke or stripped and nothing else broke? I know it is supposedly an interference engine, but I would have thought I would have heard something knock if the piston hit a valve? Any other ideas on what could have happened?

Is or isn't the starter cranking the engine?

Remove the 15A hood ECU fuse and the distributor cap and then have a buddy crank the engine. Does the rotor turn?

If so, listen for whether the fuel pump primes, and then check for spark and CEL codes.

This happened as I was going to work this morning, didnt have time to diagnose it, jumped in my truck and left. The starter sounded like it was cranking part of engine but def didnt sound normal. Im just trying to get some ideas before I get home... And very curious if it is even possible that the belt could break without making a knock or hurting anything in the engine?

The timing belt can break anytime the engine is turning or running.

You can tell whether the starter turns the engine simply by watching the drive belts. If they turn, the engine is cranking.

If you are unwilling to do any type of simple diagnostic tests, then you are left with replacing parts at random. I hope you have plenty of available cash if this is your chosen approach to solving car problems.

Dude - I was at WORK - I was asking for help so I knew what to start looking at when I got HOME...SHEESH..

Starter cranks engine over. Took dist cap off - the rotor turns when you crank it. Thinking that means belt is still good. Now I'm kinda stumped...

Ok. Had fuel, had spark, no codes. Wife was cranking it over while I had a plug wire off checking spark, and it acted like it wanted to fire. So I put plug wire back on, wife cranked it and she was pumping the gas pedal like u do on a non-fi engine and it started. (against my better judgement, but it was the wife and I know better then to tell her she's doing it wrong) Smoked gas fumes like a mofo for a bit - has run like a champ since. My only thought is somehow it flooded when it didnt start right the first time?

Try doin a fuel pressure test might be gettin build up or blockage somewhere
