Damn I'm jealous now you got two sweet hatch projects, and new one looks much cleaner, gotta hit that engine bay soon stop the rusting though, and an undercarriage blasting to make sure it doesn't rust away while its waiting for its turn.

So. Went and picked something up:

Ftfw XD

Yeah I'm prolly too happy about a dirty old motor, but the wires and cap look new-ish, and the guy I gave the $500 to said it ran fine, it was pulled because the trans puked and the car was mostly rotted away. The listing said there wasn't going to be a trans, but instead I get $30 worth of free scrap lol

Since we all love pics:

Looks to be mostly there. Gonna give it a warsh this weekend if I have time, see what's underneath. It's still cleaner than the motor in the ED, though. I literally had to ditch work to go and pick it up, but I think it's gonna be worth the time. Now I've just got to get through the 12 hours of work sitting on my desk Saturday/Sunday. And I'm making time to golf with the broz in Detroit on Sunday, so looks like tomorrow is money-making day. Still happy it's in my garage, regardless. :D

Yep. It's going to be taken apart and somewhat built (my goal is "only" 250 whp), next major purchase is rods & pistons. I've already got a ton of stuff for the motor, only part I'm not going to use that I've bought is the head gasket, gonna get a Cometic since it's getting boosted. Got ARP head studs, ACL race bearings etc. Those pics are way earlier in the thread. This last purchase is going to let me get started though. Gonna have the block cleaned up, checked out and honed or bored if necessary. Heads gonna stay stock but gonna have it checked out too, new valve stem seals etc, if something like the cam is toast I might upgrade that too. Bottom end built, top end stockish. Since I'm busting ass at work, I expect some of this is going to happen sooner rather than later. Yeah, I need mad body work done, but holes in the rockers regardless of size won't slow me down lol

So I bailed on the golf outing tomorrow so I could work. Settled on 5 hours of me time this afternoon instead of making money, I'll do that tomorrow. Not sure what's wrong with me, maybe months of pent-up anticipation..? XD

But anyway, on the second day, Hendo went forth and Did Work:

This was not fun doing alone with the motor sitting on a pallet, but it got done:

Then the intake came off:

Dizzy off:

Couple random pics, cleaning it up just a little:

As I was taking the valve cover bolts out I got a whiff of nasty burnt-ness. This was way eww and I'm glad I have another head:

Inside of the valve cover looked like hell too:

Head gasket looked like it held up fine though:

Thankfully the chambers are still pretty shiny, shouldn't need to be bored out:

And my end of the day mess:

Five hours alone with hand tools, not too bad if I do say so myself. Gonna half ass bolt the converter and trans back on and find someone to help me get the crank pulley bolt off, or maybe just break down and get the pulley bolt remover tool. Nice-looking little thing you bolt up to hold the rotating assembly still while you yank at the bolt. By this time though, just the thought of it was enough to make me tired lol. Probably won't do anything but take the two heads I've got to a shop and get an opinion on which one to use. I've got new valve stem seals but that's all I'm hoping to have to replace. Crossing my fingers there's enough good pieces between the two that I won't have to buy any more parts. We'll see.

Always nice to save money, you should check with your local parts store, I know O'Reillys rents some specialty tools for like $25, and you get your money back when you bring the tool back, I rented their O2 sensor sockets once, and I would at least get a quote from an engine shop about havin that inspected, would be a shame if theres something wrong and you put it in and boom.

Yeah, I'm going to borrow a couple breaker bars for getting the crank pulley bolt off. I ordered up the pulley removal tool from amazon for about $25.

But to be clear: I'm not putting anything back together without taking it to a shop first. Like I said, the heads are going to get checked out, but the block is getting cleaned up and looked at too. After I make sure it won't need anything more than a hone, I'm going to order up pistons and rods, and most of the beefy aftermarket ones require notching of the block for clearance. That's nothing I'm going to do myself and neither is checking deck levels or making sure the crank is in within spec. So I might as well have them put the block back together too, and get the oil pan tapped for boost while it's there. I want to have the block hot tanked so all the oil and coolant passages are 100%, and so I can paint it before it goes back in. Same for the head, cleaned up as best it can be so I can paint it. Since I got a whole motor and can take my time putting it back together, it's going to be done right. I want it to run like new and last a long time. Cutting corners won't serve me well to that end. Now I just have to deal with collecting the funds all of this is going to require. There's a commercial machine shop five minutes from my house, and an ancient old man in a tiny beat up shack full of big block heads on tables with a big pole barn out back about ten minutes away. Between the two I should be able to get everything done. I've got a good idea of what I want the whole thing to look like too, but that's a secret for me to know, and ya'll to find out. In due time. Time and money, that is. :D

Well, nothings been happening since I've been working 12 hours a day 6 days a week for the last two months. Plus I'm doing the stupid thing and waffling on go vs show. I spent a little money on the motor and haven't even had time to finish breaking it down. Gotta get the crank pulley off first and foremost. I've got OEM valve stem seals for the z6, I need to take the head to a shop and have it gone over. At the same time, I've got so much replacement metal on hand and all the holes in the body bug the hell out of me. It's time to s**t or get off the pot one way or the other, and what do I do? Order up a solid DC rear strut tower bar. I need me some motivation, direction and some free time. Somebody tell me to go borrow a couple breaker bars and a 1/2 inch drive socket from O'Reilly's. I worked seven days this week and I'm just outta juice lol

DO IT!

Dude, I'm so jealous of you. I wish I had a project aside from my DD that I could totally tear apart and do right, from the bottom up. I'm starting a fund today, and when I find a nice little gem I'm jumping on it.

Thanks guys. I only have about half a day of free time a week, motivation is in short supply. But now I feel much better. $50 later:

And about two minutes after that:

Doesn't take long with the right tools lol. Timing belt was all cracked up.

Got that bugger off so quick I went ahead and pulled a bunch more off the block:

Can't make progress standing still. Drained the oil and only have a few more mounts to pull off. Then time to flip it, pull the oil pan and start working at getting the crank and pistons out. I should probably get a stand lol
