if front mount intake really is better then cold air

Your also ending up with more restricitions though which can cause a loss of performance(due to bending and longer tube).

Front mount intakes do reduce the chance of hydrolock, because the entire filter/inlet needs to be coverd with water, while a cool air intake (aem) can be submerged much easier then the front bumper.

The aem bypass valve will help you out if you do get a cold air intake, however you have to cut a perfectly good tube. (but will save you from a destroyed engine). It is a very cool product, and if you have done any research on it, its a very smart idea (the pressure changes in the intake when water is being sucked through, and the bypass valve has "gills" which activates when this happens, allowing air thorugh the gills which is also a filter.)

Personally it's just an intake, and we are talking about 1 hp difference on most applications. Only so much air can be supplied to the engine (throttle body/intake manifold/runners/intake chamber). A cool air intake (or short ram) will create this flow very nicely. Of course the cooler the air the more dense (allowing more air in w/ out changing the volume). Which is why the cool air intake is a good idea.

Pro's of front mount:
(1) Cooler air
(2) Low chance of Hydrolock
(3) Larger surface area
Con's
(1) Can get dammaged quickly
(2) Exhaust fumes from cars in front will enter the filter
(3) Will look like a intercooler (which could be a pro depending on owner)
(4) $$$

Great info man....one thing to add about AEM CAI by pass valve is that there has been problems of the by pass valve breaking and getting sucked into your throttle body....not saying it happens to 1 out of 4 cars or anything, but it has happened a couple times from people that I have talked to...Also, for the by pass valve to work the filter has to be COMPLETELY sumerged...haha..sorry if you completely submerge your filter then you are in fact a moron.....also I have heard that by pass valves restrict the intake slighty and reducing the small gain that you got from it....my 2 cents..not trying to start fights ..just throwing some stuff out there..feel free to comment, dont want to fight but I will comment back

I haven't heard anything bout them braking apart, it might be due to improper install of the bypass valve. Engine's are nothing more then a vaccume and they are pretty strong, so if cutting the pipe makes it weaker then its a very good chance its going to come apart and be sucked into the throttle body (another reason to be careful w/ the bypass valve)

In order for a car to hydrolock the filter will need to be full submerged. If the filter is only partly submerged water will still get int however, through the revolution of an engine it will burn away (the car will buck, stall, and repeat untill all water is burnt). I can vouche (did i spell that right?) for this because i hit a puddle w/ my aem cool air and spent over 20 mins till she started back up. Its very easy to hydrolock and engine, and even easier to get a close call.

Sometimes a ram intake is a bad idea because there is no room in the engine bay for a filter and/or because the engine is running hot. AEM released the bypass valve for this reason, and the fact that many people who bought the Cool Air Intake were upset because they were not aware of the chance for hydrolock untill after it was installed.

If your are worried about hydrolock to any extent get a short ram. If you are looking for performance and are willing to risk, or sacrafice driving in rain get the cool air. (Just becareful and stick to the middle lane so that you dont hit an unexpected puddle)

I wouldn't recommend the bypass valve, if you are willing to cut your piping then just get a a short ram, save you money, time, and prolly risk.

I like front mount intakes, would never buy one though, it looks like a intercooler, makes your car more of a theft target and it makes your car look like its faster than it really is..Im not realy into the all show no go thing....but I havent heard anything bad about them..I would get a CAI if I were you though

:werd: This guy and I are on the same page here....I totally agree that some part of the by pass valves breaking are install errors but you gotta remember they are just plastic and plastic breaks.....I wouldnt recommend a by pass valve either...

If you are really worried about hydrolocking your engine but a CAI and then convert it to SRI during the rainy months..if you dont want to do that, dont drive through deep puddles and if you absolutely have to, idle through them because as idle or LOW rpms, your car isnt sucking in as much air as it is at higher rpms so there for less risk of sucking in water...2 more cents

Well you got a couple of choices....first, you could mount it and use it...if you want a front mount intake you should use this one if was free....but if you dont want your car to look like it turboed, then sell it on ebay and take the money for another modification that you want.....I mean you already have cold air intake, is there a nother mod you really want? if not, the front mount intake would be cool becuase you dont see it that much, I personally wouldnt put it on because I still think CAI is the best intake you can get besides and intercooler..hehe...my 2 cents..hope that helps
