I recently got pulled over and ticketed for my exhaust. It is a 5 Zigen Catback. I thought that it was legal I was just wondering if any one knows if it is or not and if is legal how can I prove it in court. I got a reckless driving ticket at the same time so I am trying to get out of at least one. Thanks for your help.

in oklahoma its illegal for aftermarket exhaust (in the books) but they hardly enforce it. Usually if you pissem off or they get you for attending a speed contest or racing. Or if its just obnociously (sp?) loud. But yeah they probably did it because you got reckless driving too.

don't know bout VA but here some exhausts are legal (emissions wise), but if they are rev'd too loudly you can get a ticket for that (over 3500 rpms is usually too loud) even if the exhaust itself is legal.

Good Luck

As tested by Turbo Magazine in Dec.-02

Exhaust - dB(A) @ Idle - dB(A) @ 3000RPM - Peak HP
Stock - 87 - 86 - 191.8
GReddy - 94 - 92 - 200.9
M2 - 94 - 94 - 195.9
Super Sprint - 95 - 101 - 198.0
MRT Perf. - 96 - 104
HKS - 97 - 102 - 202.9
5 Zigen - 98 - 105 - 198.7
Apexi - 100 - 104 - 201.1
Tanabe - 101 - 107 - 197.7
Thermal - 101 - 108 - 198.3
Skunk2 - 102 - 106 - 199.3
Blitz - 104 - 103 - 200.2

got that off of a GReddy add on the back of August2003 issue of Import Tuner. It says that the dB limit is 95 on here. The numbers per application varie a lot.. and i'm not sure what car this is on.. my guess is WRX. On the Celica GTS- the GReddy Evo exhaust is 82dB @ idle and 83 @ 3000rpm

All right heres the deal, I got the same ticket a few months back. Ok first drive to a CHP station and they'll tell you the places that are certified to check a modified exhaust, then if you don't want to worry about passing put on the silencer. When the test is done, make sure you ask for the paper work from the guy saying that you met the level of sound or whatever. Ok then you go to court the judge will ask you about the motified exhaust, ask if you can show him the paper work. he should write off that part of the ticket, but be ready for a fine of 700 dollars or more depending on your record. Enjoy

reckless driving tickets are a pretty big deal...

CHP = california highway patrol..

When I got my exhaust ticket, I went to an exhaust/muffler place and they tested it.. signed a paper saying this is how loud it was.... and that's what I took to court.

Of course, in the state of WA, believe it or not, they'll tell you it'll illegal to modify the stock performance of your car in any way. WTF?!?!

Heres California's law about exhaust systems, because if its legal here, its legal anywhere elce.

VC 27151 Modification of Exhaust Systems: Sound level in Compliance
(a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article2.5 (Section 27200) No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purpose of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacture's gross vehicle weight rating less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

The laws may change state-to-state, but in my opinion, the state of California has the strictist law of every state.

im new to imports, on my camaros ive used a stock exhaust or mild exhaust with an electric cut out. for you get the desired sound or lack of and with the cut out you get free flow depending on where you put it. i havent heard of many honda guys using e-cutouts. if your interested let me know mayby we can set up a group purchace.

you know what gets me is when you here a really loud motorcycle blast by at 2 in the morning and it wakes the whole neighbourhood and the cops don't car but as soon as they see an import with a slightly loud exhaust( no where close to that of the motorcycle) they pull the import over. its like import drivers with modified cars are sticking out like a sore thumb. and i guess it is true but it sucks that they are classifying everyone as stupid punk street racers! my 2 cents

heres somethin i dont quite understand... if our aftermarket exhaust are illegal b/c of the sound they make. Then how come those loud ass harleys that ride through arent? I smell bs. I mean the exhaust on those things are 10x louder than my muffler. :\
