My brother works for AT&T and he says Verizon pretty much owns the Northeast region, but AT&T is overall a bigger carrier. I don't doubt that. I was out west for a Grand Canyon / Vegas / Death Valley trip a while back and I had 4-5/5 bars 99% of places I went (except in the middle of desert duh).

I'd say just shop around and find what suits you best. Hell, you might be better off with a pre-paid phone if you're rarely going to use it. Or just get a really basic plan with no / limited texts, low minutes, etc. Shouldn't be that much. Lucky for me, my brother works for AT&T so I pay $35/mo for 1000 daytime / unlimited N&W and unlimited texting .

Dude, my parents had that phone and its dificult to navigate. I like boost mobile and they have good service for the price. But that phone isn't the easiest to use.
