I think they cut down on the chance of sucking water up your intake and blowing your motor you know like a straw with a hole in it hard to drink your pop.

the slot where the filter goes is for crankcase fumes to vent from between the valve cover and the head. (basically where the cams are and all the vtec stuff) Well, if these fumes build up, it gets harder for the engine to do it's thing without getting resistance from a crankcase full of gasses. Now the crankcase vent filter thing is ok in a few ways, one being you are still gettin that greyish/brownish smokey lookin stuff out of your engine. The bad thing is it doesn't "pull" it out of your engine.

The reason the hose goes from the side of the valve cover to the intake mani (or short ram/CAI) is because that line will actually "pull" the gasses from the head. With just the filter on there it can breathe, but it doesn't pull the fumes out like it was originally designed. IMO the best thing I've seen is to T off the middle of the hose running between the valve cover and the intake and put your filter in the middle there. That way there is still a "pulling" force on the valve cover, but the fumes are gettin released by the filter instead of goin to your intake and coming back inside your engine. Hope this makes sense.
it also takes unburned air (yet still really f**king hot) that is circulated into the crankcase and puts it back into your intake. happy pappy?
