languages?

... i don't understand why so many americans now how to count to ten in more than english, but don't know anything else.

well

english - learned it from my parents when i was like 0yrs old
spanish - learned it in kindergarden along with some easy phrases
german - learned from my grandpa when i was younger [he speaks fluent german]
french - leaned while my sister was taking french in highschool
japanese - learned from my girlfriend who is japanese and speaks it fluently

i also speak very very bad spanish. enough to get around barely but not to hold a conversation

Which is really screwed up because I can communicate well with people straight off the ranch in Mexico but if I was forced to speak to someone in proper Castillan, I would be totally lost. Real Spainiards sound funny to me, like they are lisping or something.

I can speak mandarin, some spanish (went to costa rica for a month!), and some foods in tagalog/illicano. yummy.

funny: this filipino guard at my work always says stuff to me in tagalog and i just say hi, giggle, smile, and walk quickly away.

I was good with German in high school, three years later I can understand a lot of it but can't say much. Trying to learn Japanese, FYI Rosetta Stone is an awesome program for learning a new language.

My father speaks Vietnamese pretty well....I know 30-40 odd words.

Funny thing about that, one of my best friends in High School's family was from Hanoi. My dad is trying to talk to him one day and my friend stops him, "I can't understand you, you speak in southern dialect and have a terrible english accent.

Great. I brought the NVA to my dad's house. He just laughed about it and said he never imagined having a north Vietnamese over at his house.
