Both are exactly the same platform HA4 and HH4 chassis. Clearly the ONLY difference is that one is a pickup and other is a van. Same 3 cylinder 600cc (0.9L) E07A engine mated to a very short 5 speed manual REALTIME AWD transmission. Mid-engine, as it barely sites in front of the rear CV's. With a whipping 39HP its gets up to 70mph but you are really pushing the RPM above 7000. I have had it up to about 79 mph going downhill and its basically pucker factor at that speed in this little thing.

Sweet! A guy down the road from me had an Acty, was always cool to see around the neighborhood and at local shows. Got a lot of attention, too.

I've always liked those little asian utility trucks...
I really want one of those new Toyota Hilux, with the 2.4L Diesel, but it sounds like there's no chance the EPA will let us get them.

It actually has to do with bananas as why we no longer get the Toyota Hilux or any light duty pickups of their class that are not produced by US automakers.

I assume you're referring to the import tariffs? That just means they can't be imported cheaply, but they could be manufactured here.
I'm pretty sure it's the EPA, which has made small trucks impossible.
The current required MPG is based off the wheelbase & track, and the way the numbers work out, mini trucks would have to have an insane MPG to meet CAFE standards.

Been a while since i looked into this, but IIRC, a little Toyota from the 80's would have to get around 50mpg, by today's standard

In other news..
There's a couple Cushman Mini Trucks nearby, pretty sure they're just a re-badged Suzuki Carry.
I'd have already pulled the trigger if they had been RHD.

I meant to say the Chicken Tax, not the Banana tax. But yes back in the 1960's an issue with the sales of Chickens caused a new law to pass that raised import taxes on light duty trucks to the USA. Overtime this tax was so steep it was no longer profitable for Toyota and other manufacturers to import. Why they dont assemble them here in the US is beyond me now a days.

The market is there but we wont want to pay the tax which will price out the Hilux over comparable trucks such as the Colorado, Ranger and such.
