Almost sounds like something shorted when you slid your unit in. (Can I say that? )

You lucky dog! You get to pull your work back apart and check it all out again. Rookie mistake! hahahah...no, it happens to the best of us.

You can use a computer safe logic probe on a 5th gen, no problems. A Waekon costs about 90-100 dollars. Some of the guys I work with do fine with the $30 probes though. Just make sure it's computer safe.

You have to use a DMM on really new cars or you'll trip a MIL. Not a problem on 5gs though

I'm having the same freakin problem... I'm a total electronics n00b... is there a guide or something online (wasn't any in the repair manual) that says what wire is what? Because nothing seems to match what it used to be connected to... (ex. yellow power wire from old deck connected to a red wire with yellow strip that disappears to somewhere in the car???) Maybe I'm just a moron

make sure that you have enough clearance for the wires when you push it in. It sounds like you have it wired correctly but the wires are getting squished or smashed when you put the radio in and casuing the wires to come loose, short out, or the harness is getting unplugged. Is it hard to push the head unit in? If the wires are getting smashed on something metal in the back it can short out and blow a fuse or mess something up in your head unit.

I double-checked the wiring with a guide and am 110% that it's wired correctly... I also trimmed out as much excess wire as I could, to cut back on bulk, and zip-tied them together in a neat little bundle but STILL nothing... I think my clock problem is related to something else... because when I push on it, it lights up fine, but when I take my finger off it goes dead. I took it out, checked the wires (all snug) blew the dust out and re-connected it and still nothing. Same with the CD player. I think I may have blown a fuse the first time I f**ked with it. I remember accidentally touching one wire to something and getting a little shock but it never happened again. If I did blow a fuse, how would I know? And would it most likely be the one in the player itself or down under the dash?

Sorry for all the questions... as I said, I'm a car electronics n00b  I just wanna have a working CD player before Friday's drive to Worcester... QUEEN + PAUL ROGERS LIVE!!!!

Yep as Essasin said, blown fuse in the engine bay fuse box.

'Back up' 7.5.

Exact same thing happened to me yesterday when I changed head units, replaced that fuse and it's all sorted =)

okay now I'm pissed... The fuse was blown and I replaced it... I get in the car, reset the unit and I hear the reset noises and I get all excited. I start my car and... nothing happens... I try putting a CD in... and it takes it! I'm psyched again. Then... nothing... I press eject and it gives me the CD back. But besides that, there's nothing on the screen, no sound to speak of or anything!

GAH!!!

Ideas?

check the fuse again to see if it is blown. Sounds like you have a 12 volt (yellow wire on aftermaket stereo)feed to it but the accessory (red wire on aftermaket stereo's) isn't hot. If all fuses are good then pull your head unit out, while it is still plugged in turn your key to on (or what ever setting you have the radio hooked up to) and put a test light on the red wire and also the yellow wire. They should both be hot. If they aren't then something in your wiring or fuses is wrong. Also head units will sometimes have an inline fuse or a fuse on the back of the unit. Also check the fuses in the car and see if those are still good. You can always put your stock head unit back in and that will let you know if the stock wiring is still good or bad. That will narrow down some of the searching.
