if you have the stock bulbs behind your gauges, you should be fine. i painted my needles blue and changed all my gauge lights to blue, so there a bit harder to see, but you get used to it after a while

The sharpe will create an opaque surface on the needle and the light WILL NOT be able to shine through.

as long as you paint the back of the needle and leave the front clear, it should be fine, but the color you use determines how bright it will be. I have mine painted white from the back and lit with blue leds. Looks just like stock if not brighter. If you paint the front, its not gonna be very good.

hmm but painting the backside is quite difficult since you can't remove the needles... there will be some unwanted paint on the front of it. And that makes you need to paint them from the front too :(

Needles for the 01+ civic can be pulled out, and the orange paint stripped using 90% isopropyl alcohol. Maybe you can take off the paint? I'm not sure what your needles look like. You could also carefully cut red taillight repair tape into a needle size strip and put that on the front. It will let red light through.

But to answer your question, painting the needle from the front will make them not light up. But again it might depend on the needle. You could use blacklight or glow in the dark paint and use a uv neon to light them up from somewhere.

gearbox, thats a sweet idea, the UV that would look awsome, get some blue UV paint or something then u could paint the whole needle then find a kind of hidden place to put the UV neon and it would make the Needles Glow! omg omg omg, so doing this tomorrow!

dude the uv idea would kick ass not a bad idea at all especially if you have some halo gauges it would look pretty tight.

ya i think u can pick up the Uv paint at a local Geek shop and then it would just be a matter of finding a UV neon tube that is compatible with 12V

96-00 usdm needles will not glow. the needles are made of plastic. the only way a needle can glow is if the needles are made out of lexan.

heres my gauges.
