question about NepTune

My vehicle has been tuned on Neptune about a year ago. Since then, I've built my engine (block and head). I'm not taking my car to the same shop to do another tune. I'm not very familiar with Neptune as far as the licensing. The shop I talked to asked if I had the license already, so I said I wasn't sure. He said it'll be $150 for the license fee. He also said since he didn't tune it the previous time he's gonna charge $500 instead of the retune charge of $300. Is that right or is the shop just scamming me? I don't see why I can't just retune since I'm already running Neptune. I would appreciate any feedback from Neptune dealers.

what all did you have done to your longblock?

what are your mods etc?

If he didn't tune it before then he has zero idea what he is getting into, I wouldn't of charged you for a cleanup tune but it doesn't surprise me that he feels the need to do that.

Not all shops charge the same amount for each tune btw, but if not starting from scratch I do not see the reason for the higher price. Should be an hourly fee and go by however long the labor is.

I should mention the shop that quoted me the tune is the same shop that has done all this work.

The head has been cnc ported, 5 angle valve job, Pro 1 cams, supertech valves, Brian crower valve springs/retainers, Brian crower timing gears

The block has been bored over, sleeved, has Manley rods with wiseco 9.1 pistons.

I'm eventually going to boost the car but that won't be for a little while.

So if I don't take my car to the same shop every time I will get charged for licensing and full priceor a tune?

No you should only pay the licensing fee once, in fact if the tuner has used RTP before they shouldn't have to buy it again.

Like if you go to another tuner and he does not have the license, he has to buy it in order to use it on your car. It is being tuned with Demon RTP I assume?

I have no idea what that shop uses to tune. The shop is Blueridge Motorsports, if you happen to know anything about them. I just think $500 is a bit much.

For a full fledge tune it isn't bad at all, the issue I see is your car isn't boosted right now so you should really only need a comparative basemap and take it easy on it until it is ready for everything.

Why not just let the tuner use what he wants to use? Did he suggest any other route for a tune?

Are you running just a chipped ecu or what?

I have it chipped. He only tunes on Neptune or hondata. Would they have a comparative basemap they can just use?

yeah hondata has a shitload of other tunes others have made and Neptune should too. Doesn't make sense to write a whole new tune when Im sure one that already exists in either database.

So using a tune that's already in the database wouldn't be so difficult? Does the $500 still sound reasonable then?.. I'm just getting frustrated with them. They've had my car since July of 2013 and I still haven't gotten it back. I've literally went to get something out of my car a few weeks ago and there was spiderwebs all over the inside. They had the block already bored and sleeved before so all they had to do was get the head ported and build the engine. Not sure why its taken them close to a year to build it. The owner always wants cash and he wants it in advance. I've paid $6200 so far and still need to pay $1080 for "labor, tune, and a head gasket". I've asked for invoices and I always get an excuse to why he can't give them to me "the system is down" "we just changed systems and we haven't switched everything back yet"... So I'm a bit tired of dealing with them, I feel I'm just getting screwed.

I would find another shop, that is shady as f**k those builds are done overnight now. Honestly you could of had a built longblock for 3k and a base map installed for less than a couple hundred. It takes 10mins to rewrite a chip from either Hondata or Neptune's database.

Then of course more money for fuel and supporting mods but if you're n/a right now you done need all that to get your car home safe. Ask them for invoices now or you're getting the BBB involved.

Damn, I got shafted... I got my car out of there today. I paid the $580 without the tune (-500 of the total). To make things even better they gave me the car and said "by the way I think you have leak in your clutch slave cylinder or master cylinder"..... Now I have a car that runs like s*** because it needs a tune and I can't drive it anywhere because there is no clutch pedal.

I asked them to build me an engine. I bought the bored and sleeved block from them. I gave them the money for them to buy pistons, rods, bearings, cams, valves, springs, retainers, and to cnc my head. All they had to do was wait for the parts to come in, wait for the head to be machined, and then build it. I don't know why it took them from July 2013 to now.

The built engine is in it now. The injectors are stock and so is the pump. From the time they cranked it to put it the uhaul to this morning when I tried to crank it nothing has changed. I remember it smelling like straight gas when it was running and now when i try to crank it. Is it possible for the A/F to be too rich to be able to ignite?

I would go through the whole fuel system, pull the plugs and see if they are soaked in gas etc. Then check all the basics

Timing
Fuel
Spark
Grounds

I suppose you have no way of telling if they messed with the tune at all.

I have no idea if they messed with the tune. Honestly, I think when I came to pick my car up from them that was the first time they even cranked it. There is fuel pressure at least. Im going out there now to check the plugs and make sure they arent fouled.

They were soaked in fuel. Brushed them clean and now it fires right up. Now I can put it on a dolly and get it tuned next week.

JULY 2013?!?!?! Woooow that's WAY too long. Since you have the car back, do you have the invoices now?

As for tuning fees, it depends on if you had RTP or not. Since you said it was chipped, I'm guessing no Demon, as that's more of a unit and not just a little chip.

RTP is a one-time license fee -- you can download it right off HRTuning and tune it yourself with a laptop. If you buy it from them, you get the license with it. Being chipped on standalone Neptune, you can't do that. It uses the dealers' license and can only be tuned by them, so going anywhere else you'll need to pay for a new dealer license unfortunately. New license = new chip = new tune.

I would think most tuners will use RTP because it's easier for them and they don't need to burn a chip, they can just tune and tweak the demon unit. But shops can basically "force" returning customers by not using the Demon; most won't want to pay $150 + tuning to go elsewhere.

I'm tuned on Neptune, and I've moved, so if I ever go back to the tuner (doubtful, car is off the road), I'd need to limp it 3.5 hours to get there. Lameeee!
