Read other threads on short shifters, was wondering how hard the install is for one. I'm thinking about skunk or b&m, but i'm not sure if its something i can do, or should i let a pro handle it

mine was very easy. all i had to do was take off the inside console. jack up the car. remove this little plate thing and then unbolt the shifter from the shift linkage. The shifter pulled right out. Put the new one in and bolted it all back together. not too hard and very worth it IMO. I really like mine a lot. would never go back.

I bought a no name off ebay so once I dropped all the stuff off the oem one, my short didn't fit so I got the joy of putting it on twice!

That sucks. Which Ebay shifter did you get?

I just bought one off Ebay... and APC short shifter, and am waiting for it in the mail. I hope it fits.

Oh yeah... and what about yours didn't fit?

Kaedace... is APC the plague? Did I shoot myself? What's up with APC? (I know it's cheap crap, but does it work?)

I figured the short shift didn't make much difference (could be wrong). But I got it instead of the other cheapies because it's made of steel.

I got one of the no name dual bends and it sucked! The rod between the ball and the bearing was toooooooooo long, it wouldn't let me reattach the linkage because of the exhaust. You'll see how close the others are when you put yours on. Hope the APC works out for you, I learned my lesson and am going to go with either DC or Skunk2 this time around.

Dont buy a shifter thats a noname. I hear stuff about it messing up your synchros and people actually breaking them when they shift. Id like to think im gentler than that, but... And besides, a "short shifter" could be something actually designed to be bent in such a way that you move less, or it could just be chopped. The latter isnt something you want unless youve got gorilla arms. Just my 2 cents.

can someone explain how the bend in a shifter can make the shift shorter? i thought that was the whole point of making the shifter shorter length wise was because theres less of the shifter to move.i didnt know the bend could affect the length of the shift

hope that made sense...

I thought the bend only effected where you have to reach for the shift knob and the andle of the knob, not the throw of the shift.

And of course different knobs want to be grabbed from different angles. =)

thats what i thought...but now it seems like people are saying that the bend of the shifter can make the shift shorter

Why on earth would someone want a short shifter on a civic? Its not like out shifter is set up like a supra, or a celica. I like the stock with with a type R shifter knob. It actually reaches me....as opposed to reaching to shift? I have 2 friends who have broken APC shifters in half going into 3rd.

Short shifter is easy to install...I installed my Skunk2 and unistalled my skunk2 short shifter by myself...Dont pay someone to do it..just find some jack stands and some wrenches

thats because APC and all the aluminum ones you buy off ebay are s**t.....If you dont want your shifter to break, you have to buy steel

Never heard of that.

But there's two ways to make the shift a shorter throw: chop the stick down so the knob is lower (not good for Civics because you have to reach so far). The other way is to lengthen the shift rod length from the bearing to the ball joint. Both ways give more leverage. Some shifters use both methods.

As great as B&M shifters are, I've heard some people say they don't like 'em on their Civic because it uses the former method.

Yeah, the shorter top half really doesn't make it short throw, just short, but the longer rod between the ball and the bearing is what changes the throw. It actually changes the pivot point, thus eliminating throw!

What we need is a double bend non-short shifter...and extra bend would help hardcore =)
