smoking when accelerating

So a friend of mine has a z6 engine that starts fine and runs like a champ, however the problem we arehaving is figuring out why Its smoking out the butt. When its idling or pretty much anything that didn't require us to push the gas its fine. However, when we do give it gas the muffler is throwing out a nice white cloud. And when he really gives it gas it turns somewhat black. My first thought is it's burning to rich cause you can smell the fuel, but he also mentioned that his valve cover doesn't lock down all the way since the screws are semi stripped. Any advice would be much appreciated.

get a leak down test and see what the compression is.

White smoke generally indicates a head gasket or cracked head/block issue, black smoke is fuel related. Judging by how you mentioned the VC isn't all the way down, I'd say start there and get new VC screws.

Cam seal on the distributor side and dizzy oring possibly. Weird that it wasn't headgasket. White smoke is definitely coolant.
