Spool-up question...

Hey this might've been asked before and if so...my bad but there's an eclipse around here that spools up on every gear. And it's not like he's punching all of the gears. Its normal driving and when he shifts you can hear the BOV everytime. My question is this: What makes a turbo spool up so quick? because I was told before that you could get a car with turbo, drive it all day (normal), and never have it actually spool up. Is it because he is running such high boost? or what?

thanks
brian

he probably has a loud ass BOV

your turbo will spool in every gear after a certain RPM

turbos spool on exhaust gases

He could be running a really small turbo. Also turbos that have ball bearing supported shafts will spool faster than other journal type bearing turbos.

Also he could have a boost controller set to a low boost setting that is having it expell gasses more frequently.

And yes he could just have a really loud BOV>

For example the XS Engineering RFL (Real f**king Loud). They even have a disclaimer stating, "If you have to ask, its to loud for you."

haha RFL...never thought about it like that with the low setting...I was actually thinking the opposite because I was thinking...higher setting, more boost, spool faster. but what you said makes since. thanks though...cleared it up for me

yeah kind of what I am seeing now. so since a bigger turbo takes longer to spool...would it be better to have a small turbo? or is that why TT were made? because you could take 2 small ones? I have no idea so please take it easy on me lol

My boy K has a STi and had the XS RFL. That thing was ear splitting at 3000 RPM. You could hear it inside the car quite loud too.

It was cool as f**k when you raced someone. Because where it was so loud it would intimidate teh s**t out of people. But he said its really annoying though for driving around town. he would try to shift below 3k every time. He was looking into a new BOV.

why not just get a medium sized turbo fit for the application youre working on? that would be the best thing to do.

Remeber the bigger you go the more lag associated with it. But a little spray can help negate long lag situations.

But for that. It requires some goona tuning. I dont recommend DIY without the proper tuning.

well I'm the one that's going to attempt something pretty hard from what I'm being told. Dropping a turbo'd b18c1 into my rex with a goal of 11 seconds. while keeping it a daily driver. So to get that low...might need a big turbo

Actually for your app it wont have to be all that big really. Given the weight of your car and especially if its stripped.

Also if you break 12 seconds. Some tracks will require certain safety requirements and wont let you run a second time. Times differ at tracks, per safety requirements.

correction. all liscenced tracks require certian things for cars faster than 12.00, like a scatter shield, 6 pt cage, helmet, certified harnesses.... the list goes on and on.

a GSR swap in a gutted REX will go mid 13s.... you dont need a huge turbo for what youre doin.

traction is an issue with a 13 second car

itll still be a shitty daily driver though

with the gutted crx being so light unless you want to drive around with slicks all day long
