Alright I've got 2 12" w6v2 JLs...they dont seem to performing quite right and whenever I turn the car off or on I get a loud thump from my subs. Well...my question is this...could this be a result of my amp f**king up? Or could the rca cables cause problems like this? I know my ground, power, and speaker wire from amp to speaker is good...

Thanks
Brian

On off noise is always a sign of a bad install. What kind of amp are you running to those subs. I HOPE a good amp but I think Im scared to hear the answer. And what is your head unit. And where was the install done

like I said I have a good ground.

Amp: Hifonics 1500 Brutus
HU: Pioneer 8mp

This isnt the first install I've done...I've done several several installs and never had this problem...

well your not giving us a whole lot of info to go on here. what gauge are the power and ground wires? did you run the RCA and control wire along side the power wire's path (they should be seperated). is there a break in the control wire (switch or light or something?). need more info...

i had that same thump problem on the 2nd intall ive done. it turned out to be poor grounding...

Well I just moved the ground thinking it was that and I KNOW its good now. I am thinking it's my RCA cables because I am using some pretty cheap cables. I know I'm not giving alot of info but all of my power and ground are good. What's the main gauge? like a 4 ga. I believe is what I'm using.

I was just curious if others have had this problem and fixed it.

I had the same problem with my Pioneer 7600mp Receiver. The fix was to buy another cd receiver because the Sub output went bad. Try connecting the RCA cables into the rear output and see if makes that loud thump.

with an amp that big you have to remember, you may have a good ground to chassis but your actual return path is still shitty 10 gauge wire on the battery. Replace the stock ground with 4 gauge. That amp also pushed the limits of your alternator about a year ago. Even if it is capped your alternator is way to small to push it. Continually to cause long term problems with your equipment. And the wire from the alternator to the battery is too small to supply the amperage for that amp.

I do agree on dump the pioneer deck though. Shitty made decks in my opinion. Always having issues with the rcas. Crap that deck out and go with another line. Preferably alpine :D

What would the disadvantages be to running the sub off the rear out...if that's even an option...

actually just disregard that question because even if I hook it up to the rear out....I still get a good thump...

what do you have the amp remote wire hooked up to? make sure you don't have it hooked up the hu's pwr antenna wire.

I have a RF system. Brand new. It thumped. The signal wire from yuor deck cant be speaker wire (Liekt he thin stuff, not the 10 gauge) Use a 10 gauge for that. If running bridged use ports one and 4. I've seen poepl use 1 and 2 lol. that can screw it up mixed signals or soemthing. Ground is lawyas a big one. The deck also sends power through the rca wires when starting up. If you haveit plugged into the deck with the wires that hang out the back a small thump when starting the car can be expected. It send a pule of energy through looking for accesories or something. lol. I have a smalol thump now, and it was from the RCA wires. I tested it. when the deck turned on the little meter flew and I knoew it was sedning poiwer to it for a split second and determined that as the cause. W.E I dont wann fix it. Its nothing. lol.

alright I have a new question...

If I have a dvc 4 ohm then I can wire just one by itself in a 2 ohm load...what would stop me from having seperate wires for each sub (therefore it being a 2 ohm on each one) and then wiring that into the amp? If I just put the two positives together and two negatives together and stuck it in? (well on my amp i have 2 pos and 2 neg and I know, i know it sounds likea 2 channel...but it's not. ANyhow then I would just go to each 'port' on the amp. My question is I guess...will that turn it into a 1 ohm load by the time it's on the amp?

2 dual 4 ohm woffers will come out to 2 configurations on a mono block

1 ohm mono all positive and negatives running together

4 ohm mono in series parallel wiring

ok I have mine in 4 ohm...meaning I'm getting right around 400 watts a sub which is recommended...

I just got done taking the sub out and I looked at it all over...no signs of any physical damage I can see, I could also see some of the vc, no signs of it being burnt or w.e. Pushing on the cone makes no noise. And hooking a meter up to the terminals gets me 4 ohms just like it should read. Subs SEEM fine...I just dont think they're blown...

Here's a new question I have...when you have a poorly built box (due to bracing, airspace, strength, w/e the case) where does the shitty sould come from...Mine just kind of has a distorted sound at some tones and a hard time playing other tones and other tones play fine...it's like the sub is trying to play them...but it cant... My reasoning for all this is because I'm wondering if my box is just shitty and I need to build a new one.

The one i have now is a slotted box. Any ideas?

get a cap....
At this point with the size amp that you are running, a cap insnt going to do anything. You need a new ho alternator. If you buy a cap right now you are just wasting money.

And yes get rid of the box. The primary box design for all of JL subs (except the ib line) is sealed. If you have them in a ported box it better be a custom built box from someone that knows what they are doing.
I bet even a prefab box would do better than what you have them in
